Not sure of the area you will be in but 400 acres makes me wonder if you will be sitting over alfalfa fields or if the tag is good for the whole unit. If it's unit wide you may be in the hills looking for them.

When you get one getting it back home will just require some coolers and dry ice. We had my elk last year butchered and when we picked the meat up we put in a 150 quart cooler and had enough room to lay a layer of dry ice on top. It was a 10 houre drive home plus 5-6 hours in a hotel. Meat was in great shape when we got home. Good luck and look forward to the pics when you return.

Funny you should ask that. I was expecting about $180 or so. Meat cut, ground meat and all of it vacuum packed. Got there to pick it up and the kids doing the job never weighed the meat before they started. Of course the burger weighed more because of the added fat etc. The let me have it for $80. I felt bad and he was not a happy man. I'm positive the kids that did the work got a butt chewing after we left. I told him this year I would use him if we get one down. So needless to say, we got a deal.

Your success will depend on the weather getting cold enough to push the elk out of the Wasatch Mountains down to the property. Then again, the elk may already be there and you will have a great hunt. There are a lot of landowners who offer these tags and the success rate is pretty high.

Usually these type of hunts are like stated above. Sittting in a barn and they walk into the field and you shoot. Nothing wrong with an easy hunt now and again. These tags are issued to landowners because game is grazing on their fields and crops. It is a way for the farmers to recoup some loss. If they are being issued the tags it is because the animals are there. Good luck and have fun. Show us pictures when you are done.

Last time I hunted cow elk in Colorado ten years ago it was on my last hunt evening and I had to leave the next morning. Just boned out the meat myself, triple plastic bagged it and put it in ice chests with regular ice -- just kept opening the drain plugs on the ice chests each time I stopped to take a leak or refuel and added ice as necessary. It was 18 hours road time with an additional overnite stay in Las Vegas with relatives. The meat was in great shape when I got it home, then I just cut it the way I wanted, packaged it and froze it. I suppose it would be better to have it professionally processed, but I was in a hurry and to cheap to boot! Besides, I have never had any special processing anyway, just some burger venison meat one time. Oh, and I don't like bone saw dust on steaks anyway, so no bones in my meat.

I find more and more each day...

Info from land owner

The main road runs through the middle of the ranch with wheat fields on both sides of the road. The herd in the area numbered about 200-300.

does this sound right?

Have the rancher call you if they are coming in regularly. Drive all Friday night, hunt Saturday evening and, if necessary, Sunday morning then drive home. Or have a sudden case of the flu on a Friday or Monday. Most of these ranch hunts only take 24 hrs or less.

Fish, Midbrook's right.....hunt's like this are pretty much a slam dunk and if your Uncle already has the tags in hand....that's just one short step away from Meat-In-The-Freezer! Do a "Redeye", "Drive All Nighter"...drop your animal, quarter'em, pack'em home and then get it processed....and don't give any to the "Powers" that disapproved your vacation request! :)

On your deathbed you will not be saying, "glad I worked that day" spend some time with your uncle and have a blast.
