Talking to a co-worker today, he talked about changes in the CA bear hunting and we start to share stories. To find out, he is a huge hunter and him and his bro-in-law go to Utah every Jan for a dep. elk hunt on Res. land.

Does anyone else on here do that? What is that like for you guys? He says it is pretty cheap. Like 400 for a licence and tag and Indian guide basically. It sounded awsome, not what I would consider ideal hunting, but still sounded fun. He says that it is a cow hunt, which would be absoultely fine, and in Jan. On some "flatter" land (sage country) and they normally all fill their tags. I was getting amp'd just thinking about it, and if I could go next year, thats still 10 months away. I was still getting amp'd.

He said that they take off on like a Fri. after work, and drive all night. Get there and hunt. If Mon. rolls around and they havent filled their tag, they call in sick. Once they fill them they load up the elk and drive home. Sounded pretty good. I havent been elk hunting in 5-6 years and I am really, really itching to go. Any help or advice would be awsome.

Yeah, it can be worth it IMO. Sounds like the hunt has some potential. I moved back to ripon after living in Utah a few years. Shoot me an email and we can talk about it if you would like.

There are a few Rez hunts in UT. Not sure which one is being referenced above. Someone here from JHO did a Goshute tribal hunt. Those are over by the deep creeks which does not have a big herd. The Utes have a large number of elk but you have to hire a local "guide"--a tribal member to show u around. There are a ton of cow opportunities in UT--impossible to know them all.

These guys would have gone earlier in the year, but one is the head varsity football coach where we teach high school. So many times, Nov. does not work well. I dont know a whole lot of details other than, they seem to get one (fill their individual tags) every year and normally it is a 4-5 day round trip (include drive time) at the very most.

Kentuck, I read a post from mid Nov. on your Gos. hunt andI like what you wrote "more of a shoot than a hunt" basically, that sounds what these guys do. But I love eating elk and love their hides.

Do you have any pictures of your hunt, even if you want to PM thats cool. That price you listed also sounds about what they said as well. If its on the west side of Utah, that ride/drive wont be bad for me. It looks like your in Concord, which is only 1 hour, 1 hour 15 minutes from me. How long was the drive for you? Thanks

I believe the drive from Concord was 10 hours. We drove about 8 of it one day and then finished the second just because we had time and didn't want to be exhausted on either end.

You are right about the meat hunt. I only agreed to go on this hunt with my buddy just so I would hopefully have some meat. That's all I was interested in.

Well, take a swimsuit too in case you tagout early. On the way down from I-80 there's a lake that is always warm enough to swim in year round-a few dive shops in SLC qualify divers there--think it is blue lake but donot hold me to that without A map in front of me.

It can't be the Goshute hunt for the $400. I got their brochure and it said $1000 for the cow elk hunt. Maybe your buddies got some kind of a deal I didn't know about.

L2H, depending on what you got for that $1000, it maybe the same hunt. He said it was $400 for what I listed previously, but did say the overall trip was about $1200. For licence, tag, "guide", lodging, food, fuel, etc. Basically everything you could possibly think included for that $1200.

I spoke to a lady who was co-ordinating the Goshute hunt. She told me that the res have their own licenses and tags for any hunt that they sell. That $1000 is the whole package of their cow elk hunt and you have a choice of pitching your own tent or using their already setup trailer. The guide will take your group out to where they have seen elk. Or if you chose to have a one-one guide, they you would have to pay extra for the guide.

I did remember some guys posted here a while ago that they bought the Goshute cow elk hunt for $400 from a gunshow. At that time the Goshute just started marketing their hunts and was having a hard time selling the hunt at their $500 asking price so they lowered it down to $400. That's when the guys bought them. Not sure if those guys were you friends.

This past fall was the first year at the $1000 hunt price. It was much cheaper in previous years but also didn't include housing and food.
