Just back from Fishlake. Results were a cow and a yearling cow, the only two we saw but it was Sat afternoon opening day so can't complain. We got them on the long ridge out of Forsyth Res. Was real hilarious to see 2 60 yr old fat guys dragging those elk down the hill then trying to get both in the back of my Jeep CJ7,

but we finally made it

. ELK GRUB FOR ME....WOOOHOOOOOO!!! sorry didn't get any pics, my phone battery died when I tried, you'll just have to imagine 2 elk butts hanging out the open tailgate going down the road[/b]
Are you talking the ridge with the road that takes you to Danish Meadow? We hunted that opening day. Got on a herd first thing in the morning but they got spooked by other hunters coming in. My bro and I should have had two that morning, but somehow we shot the same animal. I thought he was going for the one on the right and I take the left. Oh well, he tagged that one and I shot another opening night off the same ridge. We got home last night. Filled 5 for 5 tags. We probably crossed paths. I was in my rhino and we had two quads with me. I do remember seeing two different jeeps that day. Did you camp by the road to Sheep Valley? We were the only trailer on Forsyth Res camped buy the shore. Congrats to you guys

Hey ynghunter, not sure about Danish Meadows but we went out the ridge road fork from the campground then went to where it started to get narrow and rocky and turned around. Got the elk about midway down from there, they were about 150 yds uphill just coming out about 3pm. Got both and hauled elk butt out of there, actually got to the campground area right after sunset and headed to town. We were camped just around the corner from Sheep Valley road, the F250 with the camper with a brown CJ7 Jeep.

hank4elk, Tuff luck on the NM bull but the Ca cow should work out....GOOD LUCK

Oh it should be just great. Open country, long stalks and long shots, with big herds. I'll be back in NM in oct. 09 for elk again. Just building points in Utah, but I could maybe fit that Gen. deer southern tag in on the way.... Hmmm.

Yea, I saw your camp. I think we may have talked to you on Sheep Valley Road. Also saw you filling up on fuel at Texaco in Loa. We were there getting a quad tire replaced. My brothers truck was a white siverado with camo flames on it. We got two elk off the same ridge you are talking about just past the meadow where it starts getting rocky then the other saturday evening on the south slope of the ridge. Got the other three off Tidwell slopes.

Where do you deer hunt with your southern tag? I got drawn for deer and cow last year. Hunted deer by Junction, Utah and hunted Fish Lake for elk last year. I got a decent 4X4 buck last year. Utah has been good to me for the last few years. I love going there. May put in for a limited entry buck next year being that I cannot apply for Bull Elk for 5 years now. Antelope would be nice too, but that is a long ways for a small animal.

There are definately good cow opportunities here for those willing to spend a little time after 'em! I'm going on a herd-thinning hunt the first weekend in Dec down around Price...should be good timing because the snow will push them off of public to BLM and they are trying to reduce herd numbers a bit.

I have two buddies that have a Fish Lake/Thousand Lake tag that did not make it for the opener. I might go out with them to help locate them.

hey ynghunter, I remember the truck, I think we did talk a minute. Talked to a guy on Thurs at White's in Richfield that had an elk from Tidwell, was he with your group? He said his group had 1 tag left to fill.

I usually hunt the area around Panguitch for my deer, so far I've settled for small ones, seen some big ones butat 500+ yds, usually on the move. Can do the 500 yd shots but prefer not too, too many variables. Saw some real nice bucks around Fishlake during archery and elk hunting, thats a possibility too, but will most likely stay with Panguitch.

If I can ever get everything together here I hope to move to either Cedar City or Panguitch area

Nope, we never went to Richfield. 500yrds is a long shot. I killed my cow last year at that distance. Would rather not take that kind of shot. Was late in the week and they were out in the open. Dont think I would take that shot at a deer though. We saw quit a few nice bucks around Fishlake this time around, but they are rutting. The guy who mounted my Bull in Lyman had some nice bucks to mount from the boulder this year. I think I will put in for the Limited Entry Thousand Lakes since I cannot apply for Bull Elk for 5 years. Too bad they made it only a 5 day hunt.

If I could figure out a way to make a living in Loa or surrounding area, I would be gone in a heartbeat. Cedar City would be nice too.

Made a lot of ground meat and carna asada slices with this one. Wont have to buy burger for awhile. I hope to get drawn for something out there next year.. Not sure what I am going to apply for though. I got my elk mount back already.
