I'm putting in for an archery deer tag next year but would also like to have an elk tag in my pocket. From what I can gather on the Utah website, I can purchase an otc archery bull elk tag and hunt the units open for that tag. Is there a different tag for spike/cow elk? Or is the same tag used and it just depends the unit I hunt on what elk I can hunt? Sorry for any confusion and thanks in advance for any info.

Same tag is used it just depends on what zone you are in as to whether you can take a bull, spike or cow. Good luck!

If you purchase a spike tag for archery. Then you can take a spike or a cow in the spike unit.

So there is 2 different tags? I was under the impression that for archery, I can purchase a otc general season elk tag, and it just depends on the unit I hunt weather I can take a bull, spike or cow. This is what's confusing me. I read and hear about a spike tag but I don't see it on the utah hunting website.

On the website if you look at the regulations they have a map and it shows the general bull units and the spike units. They are different and so are the tags. As an archer myself I would go after the Spike tag since these are in the limited entry bull units you will see a lot more elk and definetly have more oppotunity at a cow. What area were you thinking of hunting?

Near Antimony, Utah. A friend at work has been hunting this area for a few years now. He wasn't aware of the archery elk tags but he said it would be a good idea to purchase one because he runs into elk all the time.

That Area is a spike unit.So you can get a spike tag for archery and are allowed to take a spike or a cow.
