So, finally made a great kill on a decent little hog, using the Rage 2-blade at 40 yards. Complete pass-through and recovered my arrow. Hog ran off, and, seeing as how it was getting dark, I decided to let him stiffen up overnight and come in first thing in the a.m. and tag my pig. This is after losing the last one by pushing him too soon after shooting him. Great blood trail, hog went about fifty yards but unfortunately the coyotes found him before I did. Never even thought about dogs getting him. I am pissed! This is getting to be very discouraging, let me tell you. Made a perfect shot on him and the broadhead did a fantastic job; there was blood sprayed everywhere. Easy blood trail. So, live and learn (some more), I guess.

Dang, that sucks, them dogs really cleaned up. Belch is the only one I know that can leave rib bones that neat.

Can you hunt the coyotes there?

You're not supposed to shoot the coyotes unless they are a threat to you. I wish they did allow yote shooting there. There's a ton of them. Last DFG report I heard was there are at least 50 known mountain lions on base too. Probably more by now.

Joel: I talked to my buddy at Peterson and he thinks because of the way it's eaten, that it was a big cat that got to it. I know coyotes were there 'cause I found their droppings, it was too hard for tracks, but it is very plausible. There are a LOT of cougars on the base. IMO.

Nice shooting Allen, too bad about the hog. I've left deer overnight up there before with no problems. I guess you never know. I have seen quite a few coyotes up there in packs of 6 or more this year. The dog population doesn't seem to be hurting!! It could have been a cat but they generally prefer to kill their own.

I can actually say I feel your pain. I have had pigs run at night after being shot and found the next day only to have less left than what the animals left you. Hell, I have even followed tracks and blood trail to find no pig in the morning but drag marks and yamaha tracks. Shame I didn't see those guys. :chainsaw:Live and learn I guess.

congrats on your 40 yrd. shot bowkill hog! i would switch up to wacking some yotes with those rages! not ethical, (not recomended) but a texas heart shot on a yote would be a good payback! thanks for sharing your story and photo's!..............tra

Thanks, guys; I've had a tough road on this whole archery thing and it pisses me off to lose an animal to a scruffy pack of bullies. (Got some payback tonight though)

that makes sense to me- a pack of dogs would have taken more from that carcas imo.

Great job allen! I will be shooting the 2 blade rage this year too. I am just tired off messin' with fix blades.

That's a big bummer about the 'yotes. I've left a couple of pigs overnight there and haven't had any problems. Was the carcass covered with anything? I've seen cat kills in the sierras that where covered up with dirt.

Those coyotes are getting out of control up there!
I killed both of my CA bucks with the rage last year. I'm NOT going to use them again. If the o-rings dry out, they can break very easily. The penetration I got on those deer was very poor. On a good note, the bucks didn't go very far. I have heard nothing but good things about the undertaker, now called the meat seeker, from Trophy Ridge. I'll be giving those a try this year. If I don't like them it's back to the ol faithful tight point shuttle T-lock.

I'm pulling 70 lbs. and shooting nice tight groups with it. Man, I nutted that hog too. The arrow was buried in the ground behind him and I hit him right where I was aiming with the 40 yard pin.

By the way; the hog is now gone. The only thing left there is a dead coyote.
