:turkey: :hog chewing:

Well, we ate early enough that we had enough time to go out for an evening hunt... had to hike off all that food!

Got out to where we wanted to go around 345 or so. I got dropped off to go make a hike around some ridges we had been seeing hogs the past few weeks while my dad continued on up the road to get up high and glass. About 30 mins later he says he's spotted a boar and is making a stalk. 15 minutes later I hear a shot and think, pig down.

I continue on my hike and was about to start hiking back out when about 30 yards to my right a pig steps out in the grass. I pop my shooting sticks up, get the gun on him but can't determine if it's a boar or sow. He steps out into a clearing and I see it's a boar... just as I started to squeeze the trigger he bolts into some brush in front of him. Some birds had buzzed so close to the pig that I could see them go through the scope while looking at the pig. Just my luck. I start backtracking knowing the pig didn't know I was there and that he woudl come out on the other side of the brush. He did, only he was now a 150 yards out. Settled the sticks, put the crosshairs on him, and waited till he turned broadside and stopped. Soon as he did I took the shot and he dropped where he stood. Man, those TSX bullets really do suck as I didn't have to track that pig at all.

With the hard work now done we got to enjoy the fun of taking care of the two pigs. My dads weighed in at 85 lbs and mine at 77 lbs. Nothing big, but meat pigs for sure. And to have a double on turkey day was the best part!

On a side note... I shot my pig with my grandpa's gun (Ruger M77 in .270) that had a new scope on it from Alpen Optics. It's their Apex model in 3.5-10x50mm. It worked great in the low light conditions as I shot the pig with about 10 minutes left of shooting light. I was in the shadow of a big ridge and had no problem seeing the pig through that scope. Well worth the money in my opinion.

Pictures are a little grainy as they were taken with my camera phone...

Can you take non-military on the VAFB hunts? As guests, that is...?

I think he ate too much turkey and stuffing, so the pig looked bigger then it was.:pig-laughing:
