A couple years ago, a couple of us went up to VAFB to do some pig huntin'. First time pig huntin' for either of us so was more of a scoutin'/learnin' trip for us. We each had Win 94 - 30-30's. The game warden or whoever the active duty guy ya check in with at the ranger station on the base told us that a couple of weeks prior a guy brought in a big ol' boar to get checked out(blood drawn and such) and noticed there were some lumps on it's chest. He cut out one and recognized it as a 30-30 bullet. Probably 150 gr. I was packin' 180's and some 150's. Now this was a pretty good sized pig from what I gathered, and I recon that they may have been some long shots. I thought to mysekf that maybe a 30-30 ain't quite big enough. So I got me a Rem 700 BDL 30-06. Figure that'll drop about anything in North America. Then browsing through the forums, I notice that the 270 seems to be the choice round. Never the less, I'm stickin' with the 06. Got peep through rings and a 3 x 9 Redfield. Anyone been to VAFB recently? I'm planning on a trip there real soon. If anyone has any helpful info or sugestions, I'd be most appreciative.

Good huntin'

pbrdog,

I just finished packing and I reckon to be onboard VAFB at 0800 Monday morning, and planning to spend the whole week. I'll be toting my Winchester "Trapper" in .45 Long Colt.

Cheers,

Carl

New Pig Hunter,

emailed me today.. He is having a great time says it is beautiful up there.. but no pig yet...

We need to contact VB. and push for them to open it up... The folks who manage the hunting program ask the base CO to open it up a two years ago... We need to see if we can add our voice what do ya think..

Lets get a petition going.

That would be great to get that place opened up.

Lots of deer and upland birds there also. My dad worked for a company out there, and always saw deer, pigs, quail and many yotes.

Also that is pretty close to my hometown of Arroyo Grande.

Well, I'm back..... and no success (again). After 4-1/2 full days in the field I only glimpsed the back of one pig as it was moving up the hill. One of these days.....

But as Sportyg noted, I still had a great time. Last Thursday's daytime weather back in VAFB's Area 4 was absolutely stunning and worth the trip just to experience it !!
And the ocean view from a hillside way up north on VAFB is beyond description and must be seen to be believed.

As for opening up VAFB to non-military folks" well, I'll speak for myself (and make no excuses) to note that my opinion of such an action can only be termed "beyond selfish."
