Spent a great weekend (Fri-Sun) hunting hogs. Saw exactly--NONE. But did encounter the biggest tom bobcat I've ever seen (I'm guessing he was 35 lbs.) and about a dozen or so black-tails.

Weather was good--typical Vandenberg wind made planning your stalk easy enough though.

Heard what I'm guessing was a pretty big toad walking through a bedding area mid-morning. Probably got up when he heard us coming.

Good news/bad news is the acorn crop. Plenty of food available to fatten them up--but no real incentive to go far if the bedding areas are near/in the oaks. Tried to look where we figured they'd have to go for water--but no luck. Fair amount of pressure on them since it's deer season as well.

Lot's of sign around as you can see. Some of the places were positively roto-tilled.

I'm 0'fer up there--but I'll keep going back. Getting to know the lay of the land better each time. Local knowledge is good.

Also--a quick shout out to the crew at the gun club. Real nice gents there--convinced me to finally join.

Finally...yes, I got "skunked" on hogs...but how bad can it be when you get to hunt on the beach with a rifle?

My niece's husband is a career Air Force officer(he is a major now) and he has been stationed twice at Vandenberg with his family..............but the problem is that he does not hunt at all. None, not even dove or quail..............so according to Vandenberg rules as I understand it, he has to accompany me on the hunt itself if he were to invite me to hunt in Vandenberg. Is that how it goes or am I wrong???? So I could not hunt Vandenberg even for those years that he was stationed at Vandenberg off and on for stretches of 4 years each time.

You got it right...

Hey Larry,

You are correct. Base regulations allow for a qualified hunter to bring a guest hunter--and they must be registered/permitted, etc.--AND they must accompany the host hunter at all times while on the base.

By the regs. the two must be within visual/hearing range at all times while hunting. In addition, the guest is limited to a total of nine (I believe) hunting days in a "hunting year". In other words from July 1st-June 30th.

I am pretty sure Alan (myfriendis410) has all this information posted here on Jesse's. If not you can see a bunch more "gouge" over on the Hog Blog.

Hunting on Military Bases in CA – Vandenberg AFB - The Hog Blog - The Hog Hunting Blog

Sounds to me like the "Major" needed to be introduced to the joys of being OUTDOORS--and that hunting is a great way to be there.

Well, that and maybe a fifth of his favorite "spirits".
