Spent a great weekend (Fri-Sun) hunting hogs. Saw exactly--NONE. But did encounter the biggest tom bobcat I've ever seen (I'm guessing he was 35 lbs.) and about a dozen or so black-tails.
Weather was good--typical Vandenberg wind made planning your stalk easy enough though.
Heard what I'm guessing was a pretty big toad walking through a bedding area mid-morning. Probably got up when he heard us coming.
Good news/bad news is the acorn crop. Plenty of food available to fatten them up--but no real incentive to go far if the bedding areas are near/in the oaks. Tried to look where we figured they'd have to go for water--but no luck. Fair amount of pressure on them since it's deer season as well.
Lot's of sign around as you can see. Some of the places were positively roto-tilled.
I'm 0'fer up there--but I'll keep going back. Getting to know the lay of the land better each time. Local knowledge is good.
Also--a quick shout out to the crew at the gun club. Real nice gents there--convinced me to finally join.
Finally...yes, I got "skunked" on hogs...but how bad can it be when you get to hunt on the beach with a rifle?
