Has anybody been up to Vandenberg Airforce Base to hunt hogs?  I Heard that this is a good place to go if you don't want to go to far north.  I called up there but all the game wardens office told me was how to get a license.  Im just wondering if its even worth my time.

Hager,

Welcome aboard!  Give me a couple of days to check.  My mailman (retired Gunny) hunts Vandenberg all the time.  I'll ask...

Hagar:  There was a write up on Vandenburg in the "Calif. Hog Hunter" newsletter.  It is supposed to be OUTSTANDING, open only to active and retired military.

Due to the 9/11/01 attack you need to check access to Vandenburg AFB for civilians.

WHO CAN HUNT - Active duty, retired, and reserve military members; and prior active duty members who were discharged under the Voluntary Separation Initiative/Special Separation Benefit program (hereinafter referred to as VSI/SSB) who possess applicable service identification cards (as defined in AFI 36-3001, Issuing and Controlling of Identification Cards), Chumash Tribal Members, DOD civilian employees of Vandenberg AFB, NAF civilian employees of Vandenberg AFB, and AAFES civilian employees working on Vandenberg AFB. The base is closed to the general public.

HUNT AREA - The base has 6 hunting areas with areas 1 and 1A for archery hunting only. Areas 2, 2A and 5 are restricted to shotgun with slugs and archery. The remaining areas are open to rifle, shotgun with slugs and archery. No handgun or crossbow hunting is allowed. Hunting is considered very good on this AFB.

COST - You must have your California state hunting license and pig tags, then there is a Vandenberg pig fee stamp ($15.00 military, $35.00 civilians). You have to pick up a free 30 day hunting permit at the Vandenberg AFB Game Warden office

CAMPING/LODGING - There are 2 campgrounds, one with full hookups for RVs, showers and a rec room.

INFO - Vandenberg AFB Game Warden, 30 SFW/SFOW, 108 Colorado Blvd. Vandenberg, CA. 93437. Ph# 805-606-6804. Vandenberg AFB Rod and Gun Club ph# is 805-606-4560. The website for the AFB is Vandenberg AFB. The Vandenberg AFB fish and game regs can be found in this .pdf document here.
