So here it goes,
My wife Shannon and I showed up on base and after setting up camp decided to go scout out our favorite hunting spot for the next morning. We showed up about six in the evening and spotted pigs right away. One of which was a very nice boar and we decided to put a stalk on him. I got to within about 150 yards and was just waiting for the boar to turn broadside to take a shot when he spooked. We set back up again and right before dark I saw another nice pig and made a quick stalk and got within 200 yards . I settled in to take a shot and waited for the right angle when he turned broadside my .270 barked and the pig took off for the brush. I decided it would not be very bright to track the pig in the dark so we headed back to camp until the next morning. When we got to the spot Shannon found blood and the and the tracking began. We followed the blood for about a ½ mile and it began to grow faint. By this time we where following just drops of blood, sometimes on our hands and knees, but it was enough. About another ¾ of a mile later the trail went in to a tall patch of thistle ( the kind with the purple flower on top) and I suspected he was laying in there. I circled around the patch of brush and found no blood leaving so I knew he was inside there some where. I followed the trail in to the brush on my hands and knees because the thorns where so thick ( not a bright idea). After about 10 feet of crawling I saw a patch of hair in front of me. I poked it with the muzzle of my rifle to see if it was dead. The pig grunted, sprung to its feet, turned towards me, and started to charge. By now I was on my feet ( to hell with the thorns!) and while backing up I shot from the hip at point blank range. The pig fell and amazingly recovered and began to run to the left(right toward the wife) I yelled to her watch out and backed out of the brush and she pointed to where it ran to. And I quickly moved in and shot the pig again, it fell back in the brush kicking and I figured it was done for. We went and drove the truck in as close as we could to the pig. We started to head back to the pig, when I decided to grab the my wifes shot gun( a good idea). We got down to where the pig was laying and I told Shannon to stay back just in case. Sure enough when I approached it started to get back up and come towards me when I quickly fired 3 slugs, hiting it in the head. The pig was finally down and real work began!

p.s. is there any way to post digital video on the board? Shannon
was able to get the second attepted charge on video, you cant see much cause of the brush but its still pretty cool.

Great exciting, riveting, suspenseful tale of the tail on the thistle. I enjoyed your story very much. Keeps my blood pumping and my trigger finger twitchin'. Wow!!!!! A good one to cap a beautiful day and go to bed dreaming about 250 lb. boars and shootin' and trackin' and cappin'. Thanks for the wonnerful tale. God Bless.

Great story and almost identical to what happened to me about a month back with a boar on Vandenberg. In fact right down to the thistle! They can be one mean and pissed off animal when wounded. Good ending with the hog down. Neat calico color too. I've seen a few like that on base but not all to often. What was its dressed out weight?

Hey Vandenberg hunters,
I have a niece married to an AirForce guy stationed in Vandenberg. The problem is that the husband does not hunt. From what I understand from the guys posting in here at JHO, the Military husband can sponsor me to go hunting in Vandenberg, but the PROBLEM is he does NOT hunt. So as I understand, the Military guy has to hunt alongside the sponsored person. Is that assumption correct???? Or is there hope for me after all???? God Bless and thanks for any hopeful clarification.

Thats right. He would have to have a licence, permit and tag for the targeted spieces. Nothing about having a gun though...lol

not attacking, but, shouldn't that hog have been dead by morning? Especially, if you had a broadside shot?
Seems to me, a .270 should have dropped it with no problems if placed in the vitals?
Enjoyable story, hope you managed to salvage some edible meat from it?
With that many rounds hitting it, and with the bloodshot that typically occurs with big game as they're hit with high calibers, and you mention pumpin three rounds of slugs into it, just wondering how much meat there may have been left?
Regardless, cool story, nice pig, and a hunt you'll never forget!

Hunting is unpredictable. I have a friend who was ambushed on the way to his car and at point blank range was shot 7 times with a .45 caliber pistol. All 7 rounds hit his torso. He spent almost a month in the hospital, weeks in intensive care. He survived and completely recovered with no disabilities because the bullets did not hit any major artery. We have all read or heard somewhere of somebody being hit ONCE with a .22 cal. pistol and they did NOT survive. Just like that, some game will expire with one shot and once in a great while, the game keeps getting up even with many rounds pumped through it. Thankfully it does not happen too many times, but it does happen. 'Nuff said.

The DFG office on Vandenberg phone # is 805-606-6804, if you want to hear any rules from the horses mouth, so to speak.

Anewbigdaddy,
LarrySagola is right some times wierd stuff happens. I ahve a friend who was shot in the head by a sniper (7.62) and he is still alive today. The important thing is I did the ethical thing and tracked the big down and ended the whole ordeal. There was actuall very little blood shot meat, most of the shots at point blank where in the neck and head. And what little there was the butcher said he could turn in to suasage. I am just glad i was able to recover the pig. It dressed out to 145 outaline. Any guesses on live wieght? I would guess about 180.
