I had a couple days off and decided to head up to vandyland to see if I could get on some pigs. We had a blast and my buddy was able to connect with his first hog! Thanks for the tip 410 YOU WHERE RIGHT ON!
Nice job, that made me hungry.lol - Hey Vandenberg is for military personnel only correct? Do they offer any public hunting like FHL? I'm trying to get me a public land hog this year and have done nothing but walk my shotgun the past year, looking for a nice meat hog like your boy there got...damn, so jealous!!!
Hey, I was happy to pass that along. The spot you went to is not for the faint of heart or the fifty year olds (like me), so I'm glad you were able to use the advice. Good job all around and hope to see you guys up here again.
Lupe: you'll have to come out in November/December with a bow and hunt with us........
Well... i had a couple days off of work so i took the opportunity to get my buddy on some pigs.
The hunting started off slow and none of my usual spots were panning out, so we took 410s advice and we hiked back into a hell hole i had never hunted. It took us a couple hours to get up there, and there were even a few times i thought my buddy would end up on the pack frame!! We got set up and started glassing with about 10 mins of shooting time left i spotted 2 hogs on the other side of a deep drainage from us. We moved quickly to get my buddy in position for a shot, and were set up just in time him to take it. Unfortunately it was a texas heart shot (right in the cheeks), and the pig recovered and dove into a poison oak filled ravine. By the time we got down to where the pig was, it was too dark to see your hand in front of your face. We looked for several hours but couldnt find the pig. We decided to head out and come back in the morning. We finally made it back to camp just shy of midnight, but there was little hope of getting a good nights rest. We woke up at 4 am and started making the steep climb back up to the hell hole where the pig was last seen. When we got up there we quickly found the blood trail followed it 100 yards to where the pig was piled up. Joey really earned his pork this trip. He is originally from Illinois and the only places he has ever hunted are flat corn fields. It was really cool to intorduce someone to a whole diffrent breed of hunting. He had never done the whole spot and stalk thing and he has a whole new appreciation for terrain after hunting hogs. Not to mention we saw 5 bucks, 2 of which where SMOKERS!
Doing good just finishing up a block of training in Kodiak and will be back in socal next week. But with out much of a break I'm afraid of. No real breaks until after the big day in October and even then it's still in the air.
Good luck there's lots of game to be killed in Vandyland, and say hi for Allen for me.
