And another one bites the dust! These two porkers were taken a couple weeks ago in a shotgun/muzzleloader area. The one on the left dressed out at 180 lbs. The right one field dressed at 288. The picture doesn't really do the size of the pig justice, but he's a bruiser, and the new base record. Enjoy all!

Very nice pigs. WOW, 288 dressed, that's about 340 or more on the hoof. Definitely a huge pig, thanks for sharing

Don't know much about the black powder method but I'm sure there are people who'd like to know what load/round you took 'em with...Range? Time of day looks like the usual
sunset/twilight take...

Also...Not asking for "secret" locations...but can you give a hint? North or south of San Antonio Creek/Valley?

Always see sign up there (in most areas) but haven't had a chance to drop one.

Nice hog! And keep up the good posts...

Wow, feels good to set record.

What's the rules now at Vanderberg?

My Army nephew is going on vacation before deployment. He wants to hunt in Vanderberg and bring his brother along as a guest hunter. Is registration on walk-in basis or is it like FHL which has to be done via slow mail? Would also request confirmation that hunting can be done on any day (unlike FHL which is on weekends only) unless there's a schedule launch?

I'll appreciate the information.

Unfortunately I wasn't one of the lucky hunters. The two who got them are friends of mine. They were taken on North Base... until I talk to them that's about as much info as I can give on the location.

I'm not too familiar with all the loadouts they're using for the pigs. I've not hunted with muzzleloader enough to know what i'm talking about. I'll ask and get back with you on it though UEG.

Beast, VAFB is open all week long to hunting. Active/Retired military can check in one guest to hunt with them. They have by a 3 day hunting permit (can be bought at the BX there I think) they have to get, then get the pass at the game shack to hunt, and also get a visitor's pass from the visitor's center at the front gate to be allowed on the base. So three things really. But it's not a big hassle compared to FHL.

I know last year during deer season they restricted hunting access to afternoons on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I haven't heard anything on whether they are going to do this again or not. I hope not. Shoot me an email if you have any other questions. I'll be glad to help.

Great job on a couple of porkers. And a base record to boot. I wondered what type of black powder gun you shoot. Is it an inline and what brand.

Again, congrats on the hogs and great pics..

CaliJeepHuntr. Im in the same boat with you. Three trips and no kills. Been on them real close though. Bayedsolid and I are gonna make a trip up there with the dogs in July and see what we can find. Ill post up about it. Also, I have started an interactive google map with good spots that I have seen and spots that people have told me about. I also put the location of the BX and Game warden on there. Let me know if you want to give me the location of the kill when you get it. I can add the pis of the piggies on there too. I still havent decided if it is a good idea or not to make it public. Guys, let me know what you think. I have always been up to sharing good hunting spots. But as soon as people start hitting those places hard they might start moving all over base.

I'm the guy (the younger one)on the right that got the 288lb hog at VAFB. For those wanting to know, it was area 2 (N. of the San Antonio Creek). The muzzle loader used was a CVA Optima Pro in 45 cal. The bullet was a Precision Rifle's 180gn QT bullet/sabot. This was propelled by 100gn (2 - 50gn pellets) Pyrodex. The range was about 118 yards.

This is the third hog I've taken with the muzzle loader. The other two were 162 and 164 lbs.

I do have to give credit to Mr. D. Gray for informing us of these hogs.

Im addition, I'm getting the head mounted. It's at the taxidermist right now, so hopefully when I come back from my Idaho deer/elk hunt in Nov. it'll be done.
