JP, Thanks a lot buddy!

Anyone else want to go through the trouble of taking a public land pig hunter to the post?
I'm in So CAL.
<

I usually don't start pigs until October but someone had mention about Vandenburg and I'm a bit itch to go out. I hunted just about most of public land in CA for pigs but yet to visit Vandenburg because I'm a civilian.

Thnaks for your consideration.

Good Hunting!

To hunt VAFB, you must be either active duty military, retired military, or a DOD employee working on VAFB. I believe dependents can hunt also, but they must posess a dependent ID card.

Area 4 campground is the one behind bishop tracking station and off of Grant road right?

Did you happen to be there for the opener of bow season in a black Chevy?

Where did you do you're scouting?

I talked to a guy out there that shot a respectable buck with the bow, 18x13 Forkhorn in full velvet. Out of area 3. Said that there was a 4pt running with him although not much bigger size wise.

My advice to you would be to hunt south base, behind SLC 6, Tranquilion Peak, Oak Mtn, and the Sudden Ranch. Ya there are dandy bucks all over that base, 4pts and better but if you want a truley huge buck that is where I'd go. A 28 inch buck came from over that way last year, I still haven't found out exactly where yet, he was a mainfame 3x4 with 2 cheaters, which is why he was so wide.

I still can't get my dad to let me hunt out there, partially because he doesn't hunt, and I think that he'd have to be with me, as he works for DOD.

VAFB is one of the biggest honey holes in all of Central/Southern CA. There is not a lot of info on it and that's just how they like to keep it, primarily because of security reasons as it is very active.

They also have a special tag out there, G-11 , that is a either sex hunt that starts at the opener of A zone gun and runs to December 31. There is an overabundance of deer on that base and that tag is designed to take 500 deer off of there. Get that baby, and you'll have no problem drawing it if you qualify, and you can hunt through the whole rut and even after the bucks drop their antlers.

A buddy and I are planning on hunting VAFB this year for the first time. Both of us are Air Force so access is no problem. Do you guys that have hunted it before prefer a certain time of the season? I've heard from a few that they like the end of the season because of the rut. Oh ya, can you hunt there during the week?

Yes you can hunt during the week. Just not right before the launches. Always call the fish and game office before you make any plans.

If some one has a date in mind let me know. I have a new dually to get there and a 4wd Samurai to hit the hunting areas with. I'm down at Camp Pendleton. I've never taken a hog before so I'd like to go with someone I can learn form. I'm even willing to help you haul your kill out just for the learning experiance.

No does are allowed to be taken this year. Buck only. I know the DFG website says either sex, but it's the bases call.

Nope, it wasn't me. Yeah area 4 campground is on Grant Rd. There's another primitive campground on the base by the 3 lakes just off of Utah Rd too.

Yup no either sex tags this year. WCP, I had the same thoughts about area 6 its real steep and rugged country. I was scouting in area 3. Shot a nice boar on the same trip. I think I am going to focus my efforts around 6 though.

i scouted area 4 and 2a i saw a few 3points and over 20 does. mostly in area 4. i will be out there this weekend hunting pig friday morning and deer the rest of the weekend. i will be staying down in the area 4 camp ground. if you are going to go hunt deer get there friday and pre register cause after talking to the warden there if you dont you many not get to hunt the area you want. i have the times for office hours and shooting hours they have differnt hours during deer season. i drive a white 06 chevy ext. cab if your out there stop in and say hi. there usually isnt anyone else camping down there but im cheap and like to track the deer movment through there so i know where to hopefully find them.

jph,
Does the hunting pressure usually taper off towards the end of the season or it is pretty consistant. I will prrobably be hunting the seconld to las week and then I ll be stuck in bridgeport for a month. If you want to hunt or swap info let me know.

I don't know if the pressure tapers off or not. This is my first year hunting out there. From what I've heard though, is that your chances are better toward the end of the season. There goes my hunting and camping spot this weekend

i just called the game warden there on vandenberg and they told me that area 4 will be open saturday for opening weekend. right now area 4 is closed but they assured me that it will be open. i guess they had a little squable about closing that area during opening weekend.
