I'm lucky enough to have several Marines as my good friends. We will be in the campground over the weekend stop by and say hi. Look for a blue jeep pulled behind a Discovery RV.

So where are the pigs???? I have a buddy that has been hunting the base for the last month with no luck.

Last time I was on the base I was hunting the golf course area and could not close the deal.

Thanks for your help.....hope to see some of you over that weekend.

I've been trying to close the deal for years and certainly not a expert my any means. But, many of my friends have been successful in area's 3&4. Usually the top of 3 and the east end of 4.

p.s. It gets ccccoooollllld up on 3 in feb.

Area 3 has been good this year. Area 2 is good too. Base safety took a big part of area 2A out of hunting permanently--mod lake and the dunes north of San Antonio creek. Area 4 was okay but the rain hammered the roads and we haven't even tried to go back in there. Last three day weekend the base was FULL of hunters--it was crazy.

All I can say is; get up high and glass thoroughly before dark. We see stuff that other people don't notice 'cause they are too busy getting to their favorite spot and not slowing down and looking.

Have Fun!

What was the reason for that? Lot of deer and pigs taken out of that area.

There is supposed to be some new missile assembly program proposed for that area (one of the big buildings out there) and one of the safety guys posted it. Supposedly there is a big argument going on right now over who really has authority to do it and why do it two years before they intend to even work on these missiles. We'll see; the story is still unfolding. When you come out you will see the signs; you can't miss 'em.

Yep, need to get a brief the next time I come up. I'm sure I've run into you at the game station sometime during deer season. I usually hunt the last 12 days of the season. My partner drives the green digital f-150.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That was some of the best hunting on base, epecially for pigs and the late muzzeloader season for deer. I called the game wardens office to confirm it and it's true. I don't even know if I want to go anymore next weekend. I have a 2wd pickup and I have trouble getting in to other areas. The warden said that base safety originally posted the signs but that the installation commander recently confirmed it! My wife and I used to love hunting that area.

Everybody be warned: a lot of roads are nothing but goo right now. We got another inch or more Sunday and a lot of the base is impassable. We were out last night and met a tow truck coming out of Area 4--he did not get the stuck hunter out and had gotten stuck himself. Some areas, AAA don't go there!

I hear that a LOT of hunters are coming that weekend.

Area 3 is still the best spot so far this year. We haven't been able to get up on top 'cause of the rain for a couple of weeks, but the last time we were up there Kumbar was all tore up on the North end. I know of four hogs taken in 3 in the last month.

My hunting partner shot his second deer last year in the (now) closed part of Area 2A. It was a good place to hunt. Too bad.

So now I have a problem......does anyone know is their a way to check-in on Saturday? We can't seem to get up there by 4pm on Friday. It's a long way from San Diego on a Holiday weekend just to be turned away.

Give them a call; the number is 805 606 6804 and see if they will be staffing the office Saturday morning. They used to be open in the morning on Saturday, and of course they are on call to check in hogs. They may even say to call the L.E. desk and have one of them paged to meet you there. They do try to be accommodating.

I will repeat this for those who don't know. You must have a base pig sticker that is available at the Customer Service counter at the BX before you go to Fish and Game. They don't sell the stickers, licenses or tags at F & G on base.

As to using chains on the roads; if it ain't passable by regular rubber, don't drive it 'cause you will ruin the road for the next year when it turns to concrete. If you do get stuck, pick up your trash that you used to get out of jam. We saw a spot last night that they just left two pallets and a bunch of concrete blocks behind after they got unstuck. That's low class. And may get an area closed.

The last thing you need to know is a new ORV course is opening very soon (like this weekend, maybe) in the Northstar Cantonment area. I'm not sure of the area that includes, but it's a goodly part of Area 4.

See you out there hunting!

Usually when they have ops going on in area 4, it's at the old tracking station or near the old windmill. That sucks when they close that area.

That's why I always have a shovel or two so I can leave the rut better than I found it but, If it looks like it's messed up for a long distance

that's when you start walking or find another area.
I'm luck enough to have a on-base Captain, (who is a hard core hunter and member of the rod & gun club) doing some scouting for us so we shoukd be fine.

One of the Fish and Game guys is a hunting buddy and I asked him about getting checked in. He said--there is a game warden on call and all you have to do is call the LE desk and ask to have a game warden come down to the office to check you in. They may be there, so go there first. They are on duty and out on patrol, but will be happy to get you set up. So don't hesitate to come down Saturday morning.

Come by the club and ask for Alan--say Hi!

Have fun!
