Chuck and I had been planning a spring hog hunt for awhile and various things kept pushing the dates back until last week. Our third hunting partner got back from Afganistan 2 weeks ago and naturally we found that our schedules were suddenly cleared.

We got in camp thursday and were on hogs almost immediately. I mean, we found hogs in the first 45 minutes of looking, in the first place we looked. LOTS of hogs. We were on the edge of a cliff and could see 'em moving below us. Mostly little glimpses for a few seconds, but LOTS. There were lots of piglets down there and we couldn't postively ID a dry sow or a boar, so we passed.

We hit a another spot Friday morning and saw hogs out to 1200 yds but they were gone when we got there, so we decided to head back to the cliff. 15 minutes there and we start seeing hogs. Chuck and Jim spot a wet sow with a pig sniffing her rear end, its a boar! Jim takes a 159 yd shot with a 25 degree down angle and drops it with his .270.

Using radios Chuck was able to guide jim down the cliff to the hog while I went down the valley to where we could get a cart to him, some 3/4 mile away.

He weighed 119 on the scale, so he probably weighed 145 on the hoof.

All in all, we saw 35 hogs thurs-sat before the weather dropped near 7 inches of rain. But thats another story....

I'm glad you got it done, Dan! It really poured Saturday night and the back country is a soupy mess now; more rain for tonight through Saturday. We've been seeing those same hogs night after night until this evening when a new player came to town. He's big and horny. It's going to be his downfall.......

If your talking about that big gnarly gray ridgeback, hands off! We had a 3 second peek at him and I'll be up next month to settle his hash, proper. In short, we call DIBS.

If your talking about another hog, forget I said anything.....LOL.

Nope: you didn't see this one (do you think I'd tell you ALL my honey holes?) and my buddy hasn't killed a hog in a few years. He brought his .340 Weatherby Mk V (THOR) out and would like to see what a 225 gr. TTSX will do. It should cool his jets.

What? Your holding out on me? Sniff, sniff, I thought we were buds! :smiley_bart_moon_an

Next trip out, some of those piglets may be big enough to be on their own. If that's the case, I'll not be so generous. I'm out of chops and used up the last smoked ham hock a few weeks back.

I am gonna spend an evening down Northstar way, that looked promising!

As for the .340, I'll make a prediction, it'll kill the hog. That's alot of gun for that little piggy you saw.....

Thanks all. It was all fun and games until the rain and 75mph winds kicked in and shredded our campsite. Nothing like waking up suckin' wet nylon!

On the one hand, it was really nice to see so many hogs. On the other hand, most of 'em were wet sows with little ones. C'est la guerre.
