Well once you get back off HWY-20 that place has a lot of cover and you really cannot glass anywhere. Too much brush but I did see some interesting signs. I hiked in about 6 miles down to the valley on the east following tracks but they would disappear intot he brush and I was not going to crawl through that stuff. 6 miles down + 6 miles up = a pretty good work out.

These are a few pictures that I shot (the only shooting I did yesterday). Can someone help me with this question. How old do you think these tracks are? There has not been any weather for about a week so I am guessing they are less than a week old but how old. Are they 1, 2, 3 or more days old. Also so some rooting sign on the private property on the east side of Walker Ridge as I was driving out. How old do you think that is? My guess is pretty old but...........

The tracks look a few days old because of the leafs laying in them, the rooting is hard to till because I can't tell if the green grass in that area has turned brown or only wilted, just my guess from the photo's.

I'd say you probably were NOT right behind the pigs that made those tracks, though... a couple days earlier. Hard to say, though.

Same problem on the rooting. Can't see well enough to tell.

Yeah the rooting looked pretty old but just proves the piggies are around and gives me a little confidence. My guess is that they broke up that ground when the acorns were falling a while back.

I have other pictures of tracks that looked a little fresher but when I put them on the computer they were really blurry and I did not post them. At least I found some promising signs but like you said probably a few days to late. I think they were probably going down into the valley to feed anyways. The closer I got to the valley floor the more tracks. I found a few spots that I think something scared them and they made a B-Line into the cover. It was pretty obvious that they made a 90 degree turn and slipped around in the mud trying to hide quickly. It was a OHV trail so there may have been riders that scared them.

All in all great day to be outside, got some exercise, and saw stuff that will keep me coming back.

As stated above , the tracks are at least a day or two old with leaves and other debri in them . Hard to tell on the rooting area , from the picture , it looks quite old . A fresh area of rooting will look like some ome just went through with a rototiller . I've got a spot a !/4 mile off hwy 20 where in the past I've seen probably 50 spots like that and still could not find the piggies , their a traveling bunch !

Traffic on Walker Ridge just went up 50%! HA! Just joking. I've poked around a little in that area myself. Talked to a rancher a few years ago down in Bear Valley that charged a tresspass fee for weekends. Could camp on his place and they would point you in the direction where they'd seen the most recent sign. I think he had 9000 acres.

I think at the time it worked out to be about $100 per person. I could never get anyone to commit with me so I never followed up. I have a BLM map somewhere that has the phone number on it. I'm sure it hasn't changed. It was the big ranch on the left as you drive down Bear Valley after you come off of Walker Ridge. There were working cattle in the corrals and we stopped and watched when one of the cowboys came over to see what we wanted.

Probably a different ranch as it is small , right after you come off Walker Ridge into Bear Valley there is or was a sign on the left side of the road " PIG HUNTS " with a phone # . No idea of their price but there are often 3 or 4 pig heads on the fence posts to help advertise !

sounds like a good day, on another note. How were the ticks this time of year? last time i was there during the summer months it was BAD.

Ticks were non existent. Snow still on the ground at 3000-3500 feet and there was VERY little bug activity all day even when it started heating up and i found stagnant water.

Kentuck - Yeah this post (and the others) may increase traffic up at Walker but it is hard hunting if you dont know the area. I sure don't! I have always received a lot of info on these boards so I just want to try and return the favor.

Ksberry, thank you for the information. I am headed up there on Sunday. I will keep an eye out for the signs and maybe stop by the ranchs in bear valley to see if the locals can give or willing to give any information. I will bring along a cam also.
