I'm new to hunting and was thrilled to see ad in my local EZ ad about memberships in a hunting club out here on the Central Coast, California. The guy called me back and was very enthusiastic about his hunting leases on 4 ranches, 2 archery (I have a bow want to bowhunt) and 2 long gun(Just bought my first gun- a Savage .270), so I was darned excited. Annual cost was $300 and that seemed reasonable.

Anyway, I wrote out a check, put a stamp on the envelope and decided to just check what the folks at Jesse's had to say about him. Boy, am I glad I did!! Apparently, this LARRY HAMILTON has run the same scam for years where he takes your money and runs
<
. I immediately tore up the check and will call the paper to advise them about this jerk.

<
Thanks again for keeping things honest out there.

BTW, there was abit of confusion about Dave Hamilton at Guns and Roosters in Visalia. I had my first ever pheasant hunt with them and they are truly wonderful, dedicated hunters who really enjoy making hunting affordable and fun. I don't believe that there's any relation at all.

I baught into this Larry Hamilton in 2003/2004, and did get onto two of the ranches, one bow (In November), and a long gun (August). Neither ranch produced, you could tell they were hunted very hard. 9 months in between each hunt because all the other times and I called (weekly) trying to reserve dates, either he wouldn't return my call or the dates were booked. As Hatchet said the price should have been a clue, but I camp at San Antonio Lake all the time and there are tons of pig and deer there so what a better deal, camp at San Antonio and just a few miles from the campground are the ranches, private land!!!!! Not worth your money,,, bend over and and grab your ankles...... I still look for that guy when I'm camping over there...and that is all I will say.

Yeah, that's why I almost got sucked in. I live at Lake Nacimiento and the so-called properties are less than 1/2 hour away and he said the pigs were doing well around there. It's hard to find people to hunt with, especially when you're a woman, and I thought this would be a way to get som experience and meet more hunters

Thank goodness I checked with you guys and he didn't get a cent!!

Are there any decent places where a non- millionaire can go and hunt? I was very lucky to find Guns and Roosters in Visalia, where Dave runs a very affordable bird club that's dedicated to training dogs (and people) with healthy birds and good dogs. Now I need to find a bowhunting and rifle club?

Thanks again for the info about that fraud, Larry

geez - FHL and Camp Bob are right at your doorstep. Local knowlege pays off there as it does everywhere - I'd be all over those places if I was that close.

There are great numbers of pigs in the areas you mention, but larry's scam is to take money for hunts on private property he really does not have permission to hunt. Or to put people on public land for money, which they could hunt without him.
Camomedic/Pam,
There are some very good guides in the San Luis Obispo or Monterey County areas. Marty Rovenstein is one I have been out with and he is a good guy.
And if you ask around near the lakes you should get some more names. It is not going to be cheap, nothing is anymore... Tejon Ranch has pig hunts for a fair price as well, some JHO folks have been and raved about it.
And FHL or Camp Roberts are always an option.
Good luck...

Thanks, guys for all your info. I just spent my budget buying my .270 and scope and now I'll start saving for a hunt. In the meantime, I'll just keep networking bowhunting and rifle and getting to know more. FHL is really nice- I always see some sort of game out there when I ride my sportbike through to King City. nice road!!

Pam
There's some pretty fine looking turkeys out towards Jolon road too.

Camomedic,

Your in some PRIME hunting grounds. Lots of private land, but you do have public access closer than you might think. If you dont have a "Good" updated map of the area, I would suggest in investing in one. A tank full of gas, map and a little patience might just pay off.

Pam,

Welcome to the board. Watch this board and see when the next JHO group pig hunt is a Tejon Ranch. For $400 for have a pretty good chance of getting a hog and you'll meet a lot of nice people who will be more than happy to offer help and suggestions.

FHL is a great hunting spot if you are on a budget. If you are interested in hog hunting I would suggest holding off until after the first rain fall. That always seems to get the hogs moving. Especially bow hunting, 'cause it makes for a quieter stalk. Hogs and bows just seem to go together.

Good luck!

I've never had any experience with this Hamilton guy, but every time his name gets dragged up on this board or another, I get the same sense of confusion. If he's really burned as many people and broken as many laws as he seems to have,

1) why isn't the guy in jail?
or
2) why hasn't someone he burned put the strong-arm (or worse) to him?

How does the same bad penny keep popping up time and time again unscathed? And seemingly in the same basic geographic area. I really don't get it.

Hamilton took our hunting group a few years ago for a few bucks. Almost every pig hunter I talk to in the Fresno/Madera area has been scammed by him or knows someone who has. He showed us a "pond" the pigs use that was a plastic tarp laid on the ground with some mud in it. After about 10 minutes on one property we knew we were screwed.

Never ran into the guy but if you still have that officers number I'd call him up with this latest information and see if they can bring him down.

Here is a question for Jesse, why is Hamilton Pheasant Club still listed in the JHO guide services?????? Cant you delete him out of there? I was scammed by him back in 97-98 when he was in Parkfield.
