Wife and I just love the public turkey woods around our small Sierra town. The smell of the dogwoods, the oak tees flowering giving promise to another acorn crop , pines cones falling freely to the forest floor .green grass and a cool breeze Right!!! Dang you really gotta watch your back out there . We have had so many predators, tweakers , out of control target shooters , people dying on dirt bikes and even an occasional turkey encounter! I don’t have enough ink to tell you all of our stories but just this turkey season . We had a couple prime examples. We have had so many predators sneak in on us that now I stay pretty close to my wife and watch her blind side. Two weeks ago I had a nice cinnamon bear come in on a full charge from behind me , I heard him coming hard and fast dropped my call spun around with my shotgun up. He came over a hill low to the ground . Flat and ready for a turkey Dinner looked like some videos of grizzlies coming. Fortunately he turned away quickly . this last Saturday I was again watching wife’s back and look to my right and two yotes were sneaking in on her . She yelped on her call and the lead coyote basically stood up on its hind legs to get a look at her. I was in a bad position so I got to my knees and spun towards him he was already on his way out but his buddy wasn’t as quick , but farther away. I put two shots on him from 50 + and stumbled him good. He went into a Deep brushy ravine and I only followed him so far. Then Sunday we were set up 500 yards from the road. Guys started shooting off the road. Time to go!!! So we started slinking back to our truck trying to keep cover the firing got intense with heavy caliber semi auto withering fire . holy chit we had to get behind a dirt mound. Then it happened one full magazine of rounds ripping through the trees right above us. That was it , we were fully pinned down. I hate to do it because off course I like to shoot and love our 2nd amendment rights ! I called the sheriff, he was on their ass in less than 10 minutes. He called me personally and had observed the high volume shooting with no backstop. He got them to stop and told me we were safe to walk out which we did pronptly. Thankyou sheriff!!!! They told him “we didn’t realize anyone would be back in there” wow. Anyway watch your back out there !!!!!

Wild times in the turkey woods! Hope you had a few encounters with some toms to balance it out. Mark that spot for bear season. Who knows, maybe one day we will be able to hunt spring turkey and bear at the same time.

We had a great turkey season. I got one nice young tom. My wife had 5 close calls. , two shot opportunities knocked some feathers off one 😂. I’m totally ok with the predator interactions, part of being in the woods . The reckless people I’m not tolerant of. We try to set ourselves up to be as far from places people shoot as possible. It’s totally ok for people to shoot out there Just no excuse for firing into areas without a great backstop. People are hiking, riding bikes, motorcycles walking dogs etc. it’s an area a couple miles from town. I’m gonna use a turkey call to get a bear. That’s the third one we have called in, the other two came in cautiously tho. Haha. Good spring !

Wife missed this one after she called it in . It ran right too me . So much for watching her back haha. we should have gotten a couple this spring . we played cat and mouse with a monster we named “the Ridgecock”several times. Got him in around 80 yards multiple times . He was far too educated for us and by us.

thanks BlazingT ! We love every minute up there . Its outdoors paradise. Not a great hunting destination by any means. But sure nice to go hunting 15 minutes from home . Best thing is just to be outside exploring.

We are around 3500. An hour + south of you .cant tell hunting stories then name the closest town on the forum . We tend to scout the lowest accessible forest and BLM areas including boat access on some of the foothill reservoirs. If you want to talk turkey hunting in the Sierra shoot me a pm!
