I went for a long (9.5 mile) hike with my wife today to see some Tule elk. The rut activity was pretty good. All the big bulls had nice harems all rounded up and were bugling thier butts off.
At one point we were less than 200 yards from 2 groups. 1 bull had 48 cows and calfs and the the other had 29 in his harem. The two bulls were about 80-100 yards apart facing each other just going off. Both bulls were between his group and the other bull. I thought for sure antlers were going to clash but one of them led his harem up over a hill and away instead of gettng into a fight but not before one of the cows defected and crossed over. Unfortunately I took my camera but didn't notice the SD card was at home in the PC. When I got back to the truck I grabbed the SD card from my phone and grabbed a few pics.
Overall we saw about 130 elk in 6 groups. 2 huge bulls and a couple that were smaller but still had a nice harem going. It was a nice time checking out the Tule elk herd on Point Reyes! The bull pic isn't great as it was from my 3x opticl zoom camera through my 8X binos.
