Waterfowl Season to Re-Open in Eastern Oregon

ODFW

12/10/02

Second Half of Goose and Duck Season Offers Additional Opportunities

PORTLAND – The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife wants to remind waterfowl hunters in Eastern Oregon (Zone 2) that there is still ample opportunity during the current season to harvest ducks, geese and coots.

For ducks, the first period season closed Dec. 3, but re-opens Friday, Dec. 13, in Jefferson, Deschutes, Klamath, Wheeler, Crook, Lake, Harney, Grant, Union, Wallowa, Baker and Malheur counties, and will continue through Jan. 26, 2003. Pintails, however, are an exception. Hunters were allowed to take pintails during the first part of the season, but are not allowed to harvest any during this second half. Due to population declines and habitat loss in drought-stricken areas in Canada, the pintail season was limited to 60 days within the 107-day overall duck season.

For geese, the first period season closed Dec. 3 in Klamath, Lake, Harney and Malheur counties, while the season in all remaining eastern Oregon counties closes Tuesday, Dec. 10. The season will re-open Friday, Dec. 20, in all eastern Oregon counties and will continue through Jan. 26, 2003.

For coots, the season is open concurrent with duck season, which re-opens Friday, Dec. 13, and runs through Jan. 26, 2003.

Hunters are reminded to check the 2002-2003 Game Bird Regulations for specifics regarding particular seasons and bag limits. Information also is available on-line at http://www.dfw.state.or.us.
