Does anyone hunt with their cowboy action (w/o adj. rear sights) revolver? If so, your comments please?

I have a Ruger Super Blackhawk that I'd love to get a hog with, but the place I go hog hunting (Vandenberg AFB) doesn't allow handguns on base. If I ever do a Javalina hunt in Az, it will definitely go with me.

I have a friend, John Wasson, who used to be a guide in New Mexico. He sometimes hunts with his .45 Colt Ruger Vaquero. He uses a 250 or 300 gr wide flatnosed bullet, depending on what he is hunting. He took a nice Texas Dall ram on a trip with us to Texas, south of San Antonio.

Never have taken one with the pistol but since I am out of commission for the bow right now, this weekend I am going to try and use the Redhawk in .44mag to take a pig. Backup will be my ott-6 though.

If your cowboy gun (I'm assuming .45 Colt) can handle the hotter loads, you can get some of the stiffer ammo from Garrett or CorBon and it should work just fine if you can shoot it.

I can guarantee they'll handle a lot differently than your Cowboy loads, though. Take 'em to the range and shoot a box or so to see where they hit at 25 and 50 yards. If you can hit the 8" bull consistently, you can kill a hog.

Didn't Speckmisser shoot up the OK corral last year at tejon?[/b]
Yeah, but that was with a .44mag and adjustable sights.

And, I suck as a handgunner.

This guy is ready to go hardcore with the cowboy pistol! A little groove in the back and front sights only!

It's definitely do-able, though. I've seen some of those guys shoot. The only limitation I'd imagine would be range.
