My area I am planning to hunt soon just got a foot or better of snow with more expected , will the hogs drop down into the lower surrounding valleys until it melts or will they stick to their normal areas in the snow ? I love hunting in the snow but if the hogs bail out , whats the use !

Thanks , Dan

I think the answer varies from place to place.

For example, I know some places around Hollister/Coalinga where the hogs will head downhill when the weather gets cold and ugnly up high (above 2000-3000 feet). On the other hand, go to Tejon and they shoot hogs in the snow every year.

What's down low from you, Dan? If there's good food and cover, they'll probably go on down there. If there's nothing but desert, odds are they'll stay up high.

Snow doesn't last very long in most of the coastal ranges. Hogs know they can wait it out. But head over into the western Sierra and foothills, and the snow will linger longer. Hogs will go down to feed, just like the deer.

Too many variables... you have to know the place you're hunting.

The area I hunt would be up around Walker Ridge and Indian Valley Res. elevation topping out around 3000' , I would guess . Talked to one of the guys at work tonight that lives at the top of Gates Canyon in the Vacaville hills , he says the pigs up there just stick it out in the snow ! Guess I'll give em a try , will be real easy to spot against a white background - not that they are tough to spot anyway .
