,(atleast when I had to leave at 1:00 in the afternoon yesterday) I will say it was an absolut blast and I think we all had chances at pigs but it didnt happen.....ol well next time!!! I will definitly be back and get my revenge no dout!, It was a pleasure sharing camp with you all and shootin the poop! Ow yea almost forgot we found a pig in carbon canyon dead with a arrow in it and had pink fletching......LOL.....ow yea and there were a 100 hogs in the tumble weed patch....LOL....just kiddin Lurediver!...I have to say I was the one that sounded like I was gettin high in the background cuse I was laghing so hard I could not breath!!!! ow that conversation was classis!!! a big ol thanks out to Ron the guide, a class act and a hell of a cook!!! all the hikeing I did and I think I still gained a few pounds.... LOL!!!.................ow yea russman got home called work and i didnot have to work today.......I was PISSED!!!!!! how was your evning hunt last night?

Anyway, quick details...

The recurve DID draw blood this weekend. Not good blood, and, unfortunately, not much of it... there's a big sow out there with a sore side this evening. But I think she's probably still pretty healthy. Many thanks to Jeff and John for the assist on the tracking job... and of course big thanks to Ron Gayer (Elkron) too!

Missed a good meat hog Saturday night by underestimating the range and shooting low. Had about 14 hogs within 40 yards of me for several tense minutes, but just couldn't get a break long enough to draw. Everytime I moved a twitch, the hogs would start to blow and get antsy. Finally thought I had a break, but I didn't... the hogs weren't sure what I was, but they didn't like it and moseyed off. For those of you who know hogs, a "mosey" is faster than most humans can keep up in those steep hills. I lost them in less than a half-mile.

I had a wicked intestinal bug all weekend, and it really kept me down in a lot of ways. Bailed out early on Sunday morning without even putting on my camo.

Apologies for the teaser, especially to all the well-wishers. I didn't break the jinx, but I haven't broken the bow either... yet.

Oh well.. Friday, March 7... I'll be back with a rifle and a serious attitude (and hopefully no intestinal bug)!

Well, I only took a couple this trip. I think SacfireJT took a bunch...

It was touch-and-go weather the whole time. A lot of roads were closed, which really limited our access to most of the ranch.

The canyons were awful pretty, even if they weren't all very accessible:

And, yes, there were elk aplenty. I didn't cover as much ground as I normally do, but I found a couple of sheds like this little 5-point.

OK I will give my rundown, just so you guys will know how not to do it. Friday evening went up Tejon Canyon didn't see any pigs until driving back out after dark.

Saturday morning went up the Haul road to the look out hiked down in below the pond busted about 20 pigs into the next county.

Saturday evening headed out with Ron Gayer. Headed up Tejon Canyon into Jacks pasture spotted some pigs on a hillside. Made a great stalk with Ron leading the way got below the pigs with the wind almost in our faces. Did the tree to tree sneak with a little side hilling got to within 43 yards pig spotted me I froze waited for a short time the pig went back to feeding, drew my bow picked the spot and sailed the arrow over his back... Game over Loser again...

Sunday morning massive headache, headed up Tejon Canyon again. Nadda Can't say I was feeling it.
Sunday evening headed up with Ron, Damien, Jeff and John. Went up the Haul Road Spotted a few pigs on the other side of house creek. Headed back down and over to Tejon Canyon again saw one pig and then went home. Once again hunted with some very nice people, had a great time learned a lot from Ron and I will be damned if I am gonna give up...

Frankly guys...I think all those pigs are shellshocked from all the arrows Lurediver launched.

They'll never be huntable again, way too nervous... Too bad, that place was awesome.

Well this was my first hunt so as I headed out to Tejon early Friday morning I was excited as heck, not sure what to expect but welcoming everything that would happen over the next few days. Finally the trip was underway and after meeting the other 7 hunters and talkin' hogs for a few hours we were on our way up the road to our cabin. Ron, the host and guide for the weekend, greeted us as we arrived. Everyone was eager to get hunting so after our orientation we were on our way just before 2pm. I headed out with Ron for this first evening hunt and we made our way up Tejon Canyon....

It wasn't long before we saw some deer, turkey and a bull elk. The ranch is just incredible, teaming with wildlife and every kind of terrain imaginable. Only a few minutes into the hunt and I was gettin an amazing experience. We made our way further up the canyon, looking for some hogs and along the way Ron was filling my brain with all kinds of great information. We were getting some hail and pretty good rain at times but it wasn't all that nasty. After a while Ron spotted some hogs up under some trees up the hill only about 100-150 yards from the road or so. He told me he was pretty sure he could get me up within archery range on this group and asked me if I wanted to go get 'em. *&$%*$% YEAH of course was my answer. So we stalked our way up... of course by now I my heart was pounding and I was getting pretty dang anxious... getting close to them, I was trying to keep up with Ron. He can scoot pretty quick up those hills! Arrow nocked, I was about 5-10 yards behind him as we moved in around the last group of trees. Just as we started peaking around the corner and seeing a decent meat hog within 20 yards come into sight, the wind swirled hard and they were outta there. Whew! Didn't get to draw the bow but got dang close, only a couple hours into the hunt. That was freakin awesome! We were back at it looking for more hogs and found a few working their way down into the creek bottom so we set up an ambush where we thought we'd see 'em. Unfortunately they never came our way. Finished the evening seeing more deer and turkey, and nice group of bull elk work their way down the ridge and across the road, almost in archery range! Not a bad first evening.

Next day I headed out on my own. I only have a 2wd truck so I was pretty much limited to the main Tejon Canyon road and focused my efforts there. Hiked around a bit, glassed all over, saw lots of sign but didn't see any pigs in the early morning. Met up with Speck as he was coming up to track his sow and he gave me some directions to a good area he came across last night I decided to hike it up the hill, little did I know it would be 1.5 miles and around 1200 feet up! Pretty grueling for this out of shape rookie, but I made it and saw more sign than I could ever imagine, surprised a couple coyotes and spotted a group of buck deer. No pigs spotted however, after after a couple hours I headed back down to look elsewhere. Drove up and down the canyon a bit looking and finally at almost 5pm it happened. There was a big boar rooting around 500 yards up the hill and just over the next little finger ridge was a group of around 15, also around 500 yards up. Went for my first solo stalk (after the group) in unfavorable winds, going the long way and taking too long to climb, by the time I got where I wanted to go there was no sign of them. I figured they must have cut back across the other way so I had to climb back up to the top, over and down again (wind going the wrong way) only to come up empty. Couldn't find them at all. Tracks everywhere in every direction, fresh rooting and scat all over, I knew they were close but couldn't find them, then it got dark. So close but so far away!!!

Sunday I headed back to the same area, hiking quickly up to the top of the ridge before first light. My legs were DONE by about now! Waited and hoped the same pigs would work there way back up the same area, but they never did show. I finally did find the trail of the pigs that eluded me the night before.. they ended up cutting across the trough and all the way down to the creek bottom where it looks like they spent all night feeding, only around 500 yards from where I was, before making a big horseshoe back up to the top in the thickets. That evening I headed back out with Ron, Russ, Jeff and John as we hunted hard all over but only saw a few out-of-reach hogs.

For my first hunting trip I learned an incredible amount of stuff... Everyone was awesome and shared so much info. Had a blast of a time and now I'm going crazy figuring out how quickly I can get back up there!

A million thanks to Ron and everyone else for helping me out... and thanks to Phil for setting this all up! It was great meeting and hunting with ya'll and I hope we can do it again real soon. That May rifle hunt is looking pretty enticing

I have to admit i could have droped the hammer on a few hogs friday night, but thought hey its only the first night and im seeing this many hogs!!!

WELL im wishin i would have smoked one of those hogs now!!! but your right you dont have to kill to have a succesful hunt!!! I had a blast and WILL be back!!!

Sounds like ya'll had a successful Tejon hunting trip, even coming home with just sore legs and what if's that damn place is something isn't it?

I wake up in the middle of the night all the time all excited and wake my wife, before she can tell me I don't have a chance I tell her I was dreaming about Tejon again. That dang couch is comfy.

As we entered the ranch the road was still wet from a recent shower. Yet the Sun was out, and the surrounding hills took on an almost magical glow in the clean crisp mountain air. Oh, yes, the road was wet and I got stuck. That is how my weekend at Tejon began. Here is a quick summary:

Friday: Arrived at the ranch got our stuff unpacked and headed out hunting at about 2PM. I was, however, lucky enough to have directions to a hot area from our good friend Lurediver. After going thru the gate and turning___ and then turning____ and then turning___ and then turning___ and then crossing the creek_ times and then at the cattle guard tuning____I found my new Toyo Mud Terrain tires sunk in the mud. After digging the truck out, getting stuck again and digging it out again, I made the decision to leave the vehicle and return in the AM hoping the ground would be drier. We were in a great area, however, and hunted that evening with no hogs spotted and a long walk in the dark back to the main gate. And the hitch hike back to the cabin.

Saturday morning: Location, "Carbon Canyon." The lip stick container on the wet ground in the pale blue morning light obviously looked out of place. But after all, I was hunting and area that several weeks, earlier a good friend of ours, that hunts with pink fletched arrows was slinging and flinging arrows. The area was full of hog sign!!! But after covering about 5 miles that morning we did not get on any hogs.

Saturday evening: Returned to Carbon Canyon after a quick lunch and found a fresh two track from an ATV! We were bummed, but hunted hard anyway. Also, the wind was blowing hard--about 40-50 mph in the canyon at times. I figured the hogs would be tucked into bed. An hour before dark, I spotted a big sow on a bench feeding. After stalking into the bench, I had her broadside at 30 yards when the wind hit the back of my neck. The sow did not run she only snorted and backed into a downed tree. I put the glasses on her and she looked wet. Seeing this, I let down and walked over to the tree she was standing by. The sow bolted and stopped about 80 yards away and looked back. At the tree I saw 7 piglets...I let em be and hunted till dark with no other hogs spotted.

Sunday morning: 5 miles and 1500 vertical feet. My friend and coworker and I hunted up a side of a canyon. As we go to the top, we caught a boar crossing at a saddle. I attempted to cut him off, but he beat me to the thick stuff. Hiking back down a finger ridge, we had 10 hogs crossing below us with little or no shooting lanes...the were only 25 yards away! After 1500 feet down, we spotted two big hogs about 500 vertical feet above us across the canyon. My hunting partner John staled into 100 yards when is began to pour! The hog took off in single file into the trick stuff, just after the rain began!

Sunday night went out with Ron from Tejon and spotted a boar side hilling it at a pretty good clip. We chose to let him go and hunt in a canyon down the road. In hind sight, one of us should have gone after him. That evening we hunted with no stalkable hogs spotted.

Thanks again to Speck for setting up the trip! And our host Ron is not only a great hunter, but also a great cook!
