Good evening fellow Hog Hunters,
Well I was privileged enough this weekend to go deer and hog hunting with my brother this weekend on a private ranch outside of Visalia. Boy is he a lucky fella.
Anyways, we were out walking to our area around 5:30 am when we started to hear hogs fighting and grunting all around us. So we played the wind right and stayed put until it was legal shooting time. As we sat in the area he started to hear movement everywhere, it even sounded like we heard some antlers busting through the brush.
Well it was now legal shooting time and we pursued our hunt. Not mintues later we encounter a herd of 7 black hogs all around 125-150lbs. We were around 10 ft. away from them then the ran directly into the brush. Another walk and about 10 min. later, another heard of 5 hogs ran from us as the boar charged through the brush grunting heavily at us but never exposing himself. No shot, but tell me about a rush. So, we go in after the hogs but it got kinda thick so we headed out of the brush.
We started walking down the mountain about a mile and went to an area that reminds me a Mossy Oak commercial....nice flat area with old oak trees and brush, tree stands on about three trees in the area and abundant with animal trails. So as we approach the end of the open area, I see the tail end of a deer followed by a hog, then another and another....next thing you know my brother and I had a bead on the hogs, and the next thing you know pigs were scattering everywhere but 1 little piggie did not make it out. In that heard we counted a total of 9 hogs with about 5 of them being some nice 50 pounders. I took a second shot and tried to get one of them, but couldn't managed to complete a running shot on those fast little buggers.
After we gutted the hog, we rushed down to the butchers to drop off the hog. Usually I butcher my own meat, but this time, time was of the essence and we had to get up to the ranch to now get us a deer.
We went out in the afternoon and managed to sit in front of a spiked deer for about 20 minutes. He came in on us and never even knew we were there. Too bad he wasn't a legal buck.
The next morning we went out again, we saw some fresh buck sign but were not able to get on them. Still heard lots of hogs in the thick stuff.
Oh yeah, at the butcher the hog weight 118 lbs., so I am guessing the hog weighed around 150lbs. live weight.
