Hunted a lot throughout Camp Roberts and Fort Hunter Liggett but never have I came across such a odd looking pig... Got this one in October weighed only 65 lbs field dressed... Sure enough it was a sow and was pitch black in color... What are your thoughts? Im guessing Hunger because it didn't have a disease or anything it just was starving... The meat itself didnt have a gram of fat on it... Tasted pretty bad too... Neways here are the pictures!

PS "Dnt mind the dates on the pictures they are wrong.. I'm too lazy to change em"

Enjoy

I think what you got there is a runt or retard pig. Each one of my domestic sows usually throw atleast 1 runt per little. Unless we pay real special attention to them, they usually die, get stepped on, or layed on in first couple of days. Over the years we have saved about half a dozen of these little mutants. Normally they mature at about 1/2 to 1/3 of the speed of there siblings. Also, there's something in their brains that just aren't wired right. As a matter of fact, I actually have two of them right now in my backyard. When it comes time to slaughter, these little hogs weigh between 80-100lbs; in contrast to their brothers and sisters who go for around 220-240lbs. My wife and I kind of dig little guys because they tend make some of the best baby back ribs and smoked legs & shoulders. I think what you have there is a runt who might have slipped through the cracks of natural selection and cheated Mother Nature. Well, until you came along that is. I suppose starvation is a possiblity. Whoever, hogs tend to be pretty resourceful and can eat and survive on just about anything. Just my :two cents:

There is something odd about that pigs head...it seems too long and narrow to me.

I'll bet Farmerdoug is right, tho...

As noted, your hog's head looks very much like a European boar juvenille. See the attached pictures of young pure blood European boars at Native Hunt's property. If you got that near Fort Liggett, that property borders on where Native Hunt has a its full blooded European boars and it may well be a young one that got out.

You know, Andy, I was kinda thinking the same thing. I didn't make the connection to Native Hunt till you mentioned it. That property line does in fact border FHL on the north end of the base, If I recall.

It does have the pronounced enlongated snout and the distinct ridgeback. It looks more "wild" than feral.

I'm enjoying all these choice comments; k_rad, I agree; that's hilarious. And I can't add anything to the ID of the pig, but I will say this much. It's a good thing that fugly doesn't taste the same way it looks.

oh yeah definately a eurasian sow then if it borders them. i bet that sow might have gotten real skinny from living on her own after she escaped, i am pretty sure at the native ranch they gotta feed those european hogs since they got all that money invested in them.

Now it makes sence... Because the area i hunted in FORT HUNTER LIGGETT and got this pig was neighbors with a private ranch which was a pig hunting club... It was in a group with a bunch of other pigs... and yes the private property did have feeders.. I saw em myself...
