:smiley_yahoo:3 elk in one day!:smiley_yahoo: I will let Rem3006 and XDHunter tell their stories. Now I am aching muscles and the story write up along with money shots will follow soon. Am still in the hotel in New Castle, CO., hungry and dead tired from all the shooting, packing out, skinning, and quartering. Damn dude broke my only Gerber knife.

Finally made it home. One heck of a long drive. On Saturday morning XDHunter and REM3006 both got their cow elk from the same herd. In the evening my hunt goes like this. We drove in the ranch and were having a good feeling some elk would be in a draw that they usually like to hang out. As we approach the draw, yes there were about 100 heads most of them laying down. I jumped out of the truck with my .338 Win Mag. Found a small sage brush to use as a rest. Found a lone cow in the scope standing broadside. I heard someone behind me said 275 yards. I sent a round away and heard the twack. All the elk got up and ran up to the top of the next ridge. The cow I shot at took several steps trying to follow the herd but she stopped and looks like she could not move anymore. She stood behind. I sent another round and struck her left hind leg as she was standing quartering away. She made the run for it with the hind leg dangling and disappeared with the rest of the herd over the next ridge. I hurried through the draw and up the ridge where I last saw the wounded cow elk disappeared. I saw the rest of the herd all on the next ridge over looking back at me. I looked down the hillside and saw the wounded cow standing there. I sent another round and heard the twack. She took off running and disappeared further down the hillside near the bottom of the next draw. I hurried down to the spot where she was last standing and found what's on the pics attached. Man I am so tired now. Will continue the story and post more pics later.

Ok sorry for the long wait on the money shots. I was busy butchering and packaging meat. Anyway I followed the blood trail for about 50 yards and saw the cow elk piled up in the open snow on the otherside of the juniper trees. I looked back where I came from and saw XDhunter and my dad following behind. The sun was setting quick so snapped some pics and started to gutt the elk. Our friend from CO came down with the truck. I was trying to pull out the anal intestine and cut it out. Then our buddy in CO borrowed my gerber knife to try and split the pelvis. I heard a snap and oops saw my the gutt hook tip of my knife in two pieces. Oh well time to get a new one.

On this trip we also brought along the ladies to skin the elk for us. As you can see in the pic, they were just as exciting and smiling.

Not sure why there are so many legs with hooves when I only killed one elk. I guess XDHunter and REM3006 each have a story to tell.

Ok here's the story of my hunt.We started kinda late the first morning of the hunt. its L2H to blame( hunting lic.)
We enter the ranch at about 9:30 AM,and the first thing i notice is most of the animal on the ranch are already bedded down, lots of them, deer everywhere under some tree's next to a bush and some close to the road.
Anyway, not even one hour driving inside the ranch, we saw the first herd of elk most of them leying down at about 800 yard away. we stop, asses the situation and make our plan.Leaving the two vehicle behinde we drove as close as possible to the herd without spooking them to about 250 yards. we stop and use the closes fence post as our cover and our rest. Rem 30-06 fired his gun and miss.at that time the cow elk on my scope stand up and run to the next ridge and never presented me a good shot.We re-group and make a new plan while driving out of the ranch.
20 minutes later on entering the back gate, we saw a new mix herd of about 70+ elk one 5x5,couple of spikes and cow elk bedded down in the midle of the field next to a irrigation pipe.Rem30-06 fired his gun and i took a shot at the very last cow on the herd. hit her a little low on the shoulder, stop and lay dow. i fired one more shot to finish her off. took a couple of picture gut and loaded to the truck skin and quarter at our friends ranch.

Couple of pic.

We were up in Craig, CO and saw a bunch but all too far. One in our group shot a cow, but she was very agile on three legs, so we never got her. Kind of a bummer really. Maybe going back after Christmas. There were six gillion mulies there, too. They call them "Prairie Rats" there.

Nice job!
