What's your opinion on WU? I know this is not the first time this has hit the pages of Jesses; it's just that I can't seem to find a link to some of the old debates. Please give me you honest opinion on the subject, as long as its first hand I'm happy to hear it. Otherwise, if you can provide a link so I can access the old thread I'd appreciate that.

Cheers!

Before the crap and opinions start flying, let me sum it up from tortured memory...

Sales tactics seem to put most people (including me) off. I hear they've changed a bit. Don't know, don't care.

Clubs like WU and Golden Ram are not a bad deal if:
  • You are in central or northern CA - most of the available ranches are north of Kern County
  • You have time and resources to hunt a lot - If you're only going to hunt a few times a year, you can do well for the same money by going guided
  • You have flexibility about where you want to hunt - Everybody can't hunt the same ranch at the same time...you may have to have a plan B or even plan C.
  • You are aware that it's not canned, and hunting is not about 100% success - Just because it's private, managed land, you can still get skunked.
Do your homework, ask your questions, and don't be pressured into a snap decision.

I am a member and Speckmisser summed it up perfectly. FYI WU has a few new properties over in your neck of the woods (Tulare County). However, I have not hunted them as I mostly hunt the Mendocina and Lake County properties.

Joined last year as an inactive member. Will be hitting some of the properties next year. Looking forward to archery deer season and hopefully come away with something decent. It's not a bad deal if you have the time..unfortunately, I did not this year. Also helps if you know a few members to hunt with since it's near impossible to get a guest on a property unless you get the plus membership. They need to print up a member directory so new members can hook up with other members nearby.

My uncle has been a member for about fifteen years and does pretty well, but he's in NoCal. I'm gonna try and hook up with him for a hunt or two in 2007.
