Hello all,

I'm curious what you all use for tick repellant when you are out hunting or hiking around for that matter? Thanks in advance.

I spray Permetherin in plastic garbage bag, throw the clothes in and thump 'em around and spray the clothes inside in the bag some more. I want to make sure the ticks don't like me any more than I like them. I also carry some Eau De DEET with me.

Thank you gentlemen... the handheld mirror is something I didn't think of. There's a reason why I can't see certain areas now so I don't know if I want to either...

I spray my clothes with permethrin which dries with no smell and lasts up to 6 weeks, even with washing.
I think the company is Saywer. They make a kind you spray on and a kind you soak your clothes in. This is only for your clothes, not your skin. Supposedly it kills the ticks not only repels.

For exposed skin I will use Ultrathon 3M with deet. It is a lotion and lasts all day but stinks to high you know what.

So far no ticks. Knock on wood

I like to bring em home and get my wife to pluck em off.
That repellant stuff would take half the fun out my marriage!

Jungle Juice from REI. Cheap, 100% DEET. I drizzle some on my hunting clothes and put the clothes in a big zip-lock bag. Put some on the skin too for mosquitoes and other bugs if they bother me. Works fantastic, but I smell like a chemical factory.

Deet...And tweezers.

Although I strongly suspect the ticks eat deet around here, and breed in it, too.

I hate ticks.

Permethrin. It's natural, from a plant in Africa and I haven't had a tick on me since I started soaking my clothes in it. No smelly DEET or spraying down clothes and boots either.

For the frugal shoppers. Buy some farm grade 10% Permethrin from your farm & feed in gallon size and dilute it down with water. Lot cheaper than buying the .5% stuff they sell to hunters and campers if you use a lot or have a big family.

I strongly suspect the same thing about the mice bait we use- makes 'em grow bigger, faster , stronger. Pretty soon we have whole generations that are completely resistant to it, also I suspect that they gain .2 oz. of body weight per day on it. The dreaded De-con mice.

thanks guys for the suggestions, great thread. I'm trying to find stuff to spray on my guys. Gawd, there is a lot of ticks this year. YUK, hate them too.

I have used the Sawyer soak-in permethrin on my clothes and eitehr Avon Skin So Soft insect repellent cream or time release DEET. DEET only works on your skin - not on clothes. It fools the bugs' receptors into not being attracted to your skin's scent. The combination of permetrhin on my clothes and repellent on my skin works very well. I use the permethrin on my knee-high socks, and put repellent on my legs above the socks... I hate ticks!

I hear the permethrin works great, but haven't tried it yet.

I always carry a pair of tweezers in my pack just in case. Oh, and a lighter....I like to burn the little bastards as their punishment.

Last year, my son got a tick behind his ear. We had the tick tested and it came back clean. I joked to my wife that our 4 year old had already been bitten by a tick but that I, in my mid 30's, with all my past hunting (with ticks falling off the brim of my ball cap) had never, ever been bitten. Well, a couple of months later my luck changed.

I was hunting turkey in the spring season. I sat for an hour the first afternoon in what I thought was a good spot and it was saw some turkey (hens & jakes) but that was it. I left the field for a gourmet meal at the DQ with my buddy. While I was eating I felt something crawling through my hair. It was a Gulf Coast Tick. Then a little while later, another GC Tick, then a deer tick, and then another. Finally, late that night I noticed my 5th tick latched onto my head behind my ear. My buddy pulled it off "with tweezers" (I saw tweezers answered in several posts), and said, "Don't worry it was just latched on. It didn't start eatin' yet." Didn't think anymore of it. Next weekend my wife and son and me went camping. My turkey hunting gear was still in the truck from the weekend before. I felt something crawling up my leg, it was another GC tick. That's right, the one hour in the grass got me SIX ticks! Another week went by and I began to feel really crappy. Normally a nightowl, I was ready for bed at 8PM. My wife remembered the tick bite (the one that didn't eat) from two weeks before. I also got a rash from the waste to the toes that felt like bruises, a temperature, etc. I went to the doctor and found I had Lyme Disease. I was treated with antibiotics and found out that a tick don't have to start eating to get you sick. Lyme and other diseases can be passed to you as soon as that pest breaks your skin.

Bottom line, tweezers don't do any good...it's too late, and believe me you don't want what I had. They said many times people don't realize they've got Lyme Disease for a long time and it goes untreated. They think they're just fatigued and feeling crummy. After a while of not being treated, it becomes untreatable and thus can kill you.

Don't make tweezers your answer for ticks. Don't think you won't get sick. You can...and will eventually. The doctor gave me some good advice, even though it sounds silly. Put flea and tick collars around your ankles and wrists on the outside of your clothing. It seems to work. Also, make sure your checking yourself over or have your wife check through your hair. I got sick. It was enough that I don't joke about it anymore.

BTW, I also use some scent free DEET repellant.

okay...off the soap box.

Warm regards,

Kevin
