A friend just got an 880 lb boar this weekend. We were wondering what the record was in California? Else where? See attached pic.

WOW, that's alot of bacon...
I do not think there is a specific catagory for pig trophies here in CA. There have been plenty big porkers taken, but 880lb is about twice the size I normally see here on the central coast...

That's one huge porker! I don't think there's any record book for California either, but pigs getting to be 880 lbs. in the wild is unheard of in California unless they escaped the farm.

Okay i might call BS also it would be hard for me to imagine how it could move at 880 lbs especially in the wild. Wouldnt it be more vulnerable to predators? I think the biggest pigs i have ever heard of maybe push around 500 maybe a little less and 600 is stretching it. Im speaking of california. So tell me really when was he released from his pin???

I cant get the pictures to back this up cuz the hunter is stalking game in another world now but when he hunted the Santa Cruz mountains he brought down a 600+ lb sow with an arrow! I saw the proof. the year was 1993 or 94.
And then.........

Just last month My son saw a boar watering at Coyote lake that he could see the tusks from out in the lake and when he creeped up on it he stated the tusks looked to be 6" long and he was three feet at the shoulder. He was within fifty feet of the boar for more than ten minutes.
This is just to let some of you non beleivers out there know that you think you seen all the hogs in California you got another think coming............................. For every one you seen theres about three thousand that you haven't

Although I gotta agree with some from the looks of the country around that picture it's hard to imagine a hog that size going around without being spotted
on at least a couple times. He's definately a wall hanger in my book but hell I'll hang dang near anything on the wall. I got a couple little ones I got at Choppers at the taxidermist now!

when i was a kid in redding out on the east side and the oldtimers used to talk about a pig that was 9 fet long and 4 feet high, i thought they were getting the blowby of what i was smokin. but about 3 years later i was cutting wood and heard some thing coming down the hill behind me and 8 little pigs come out of the brush. so i grab my rifle and guess who popped out of the brush. if had not seen it i would not belive it.

i almost got in the truck, i found out later it was an escaped pig from a farmer down the hill aways and could not get it back in the pen. but for 3 more years i took lots of it siblings around my house and wood cuttin area. i was supprized just how far it traveled.

BUT looking at the area as posed, who let it out, that area could not substain a pig of that weight for long. but hell great pig do not listen to me i only hunt them 200 days a year

Yupurs, you're fairly new to the site, so please take the incredulous comments with a grain of salt. This happens every time someone posts up about an unusually large hog.

As you can see, it's a little tough for some folks to believe that anything that big came from a "fair chase" hunt. Please don't take it personally, and share some details if you could about the hunter, the hunt, and where it occurred (unless it's a secret spot).

I would bet half these naysayers would mess in their britches to have a shot at a monster like that. I know I would.

I was at Lake Cachuma all week. Friday afternoon buddy calls and said he got one hell of a large pig.
He has been out near Soap Lake, hunting the hills around the Carrizo (sp?) Plain. A couple guys he knows said they were working the dogs the day before and saw a big one. He then went to the area where they saw it and got it the next day.
I heard of some 600+ pounders taken in California.
All I know is, that is one big pig.

Well comparing the size of the man and boy with the pig, it might be more like 350-450#.

By the time they got it out of the canyon it was in and back to the ranch, it was getting dark. They used the cattle scale at the ranch to weigh it. 880 lbs-- +/- 5 lbs for the scale.

The taxidermist guesses age to be ~10 years. Says it appears to have been in the wild for a few years.

The guys that were working the dogs said this pig put the hurt on 5 dogs.

Hey Speckmisser- I pay little attention to what others think- especially when they don't sign there posts.

Bishop- Stranger things have been caught.

Post some more pics if you got 'em and tell us the rest of the story.

From the picture it looks like they got it out of the canyon in the daylight.

What did you move him with? I have seen a pic of a "700 lb" pig killed in Alabama and he was about twice the size of that one(in girth, but about the same length). This pig was not weighed and was left in the woods because the folks who killed him could(would) not move him. What a shame to waste all of that meat. I any event, what a great big hog, thanks for sharing.
