...and don't leave out handguns and calibers. I'm looking to go on a guided hunt sometime. I have a number of good calibers in rifles (22Hornet, 223,6mm). I think I may want to go with a handgun, though.

Thanks!

In rifle calibers here are my 3 favorite.

Savage bolt action .223 - , NEF single shot .243 - , and SKS (modified to 5 rounds) in 7.62X39.

Hand guns as follows:

- Smith and Wesson 586 in .357 caliber, - Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 Mag.

What a great photo. That memory will never go away!

You're right about the many calibers one can use and it does make things more fun. In fact it's a hoot just researching. --- Basically what I'm looking for is a non-exiting caliber & round.

I've been contemplating the 32 H&R Mag. I would imagine it would be enough. What do you think? What about a factory 38 load or even the 45 ACP?

Any of the small calibers work well. 243 and 6 mm work great at longer range. 222, 223 and 22-250 are also pretty good. If you have a good varmint gun, it is probably a good Javy gun!

Pecci,

Just my opinion but the 32 H&R might be a little light (way better than a .22 mag though which is legal in some states for javelina).

My personal experience is, I once shot a Javelina 4 times from 15 to 5 yards before it expired. I was using a .357 mag with 180 grain hollow points on the first two shots, and switched to 158 grain .38 spl's for the last two shots. All shots were just behind the front leg or through the top of the back into the chest cavity and into the base of the neck to finish it.

I learned from that to use a lighter hollow point, maybe a 140 grn. hollow point.

Anyway, even though they might only weigh between 35 and 60 lbs they are tough critters and something bigger than a 32 H&R might be a better choice.
