I'm interested in finding out what rifles and ammo most of you use for your Elk hunting. I'll start. Winchester Model 70 30/06, Winchester 180 gr Supreme Fail Safe but am interested in trying out others when I go to the range.
My PC tech uses a 300 Weatherby Mag with hand loads of Nosler Solid Base Bullets go to http://www.nosler.com and go into their on line store BTW my friend is successful with his CO Elk Hunts.
I hunt Elk with my Weatherby MarkV Alaskan (synthetic/stainless) chambered in .300wby. I shoot Weatherby brand ammo loaded by Norma with 180gr Nosler Partitions. This combo has served me very well with shots of 25yds out to 400.
I'm pretty happy with my Savage 110 in 30-06 shooting 180gr Nosler Partitions. Same load for deer and hogs...
Only killed one elk with it so far, but I'm real happy with the performance. Most rifles far outshoot their owners... shoot what you're comfortable with. Your 30-06 ought to be just fine.
Weatherby Euromark 300 wthby mag tossing out Federal Premium 180 gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claws or a Winchester model 70 suupergrade, 7mm mag spitting out 160 gr Nosler Partitions
OR
T/C Firehawk 58 cal, 110 gr Pyrodex select with a 555 gr maxiball
I have used and shot elk with 3 different Cal. from a 270 using 150gr Rem core lokts and 150gr Nosler Solid Base, 30-06 using 165gr Nosler Part. to a 338 using 210gr Nosler Part, all where reloads.
Every year during the offseason I try to find something better then the Nosler Part. or Solid Base and keep coming back IMHO they have the most accurate and lethal bullet on the market.
