Size doesnt matter and the checks in the mail, just wanted to get a couple other lies out of the way. With deer/pig success under 10% I doubt very many people without exclusive private property access pass on many legal animals. I love the guys in the deer camp that tell you how they passed on legal bucks waiting for a trophy.....ya right:smiley_green_with_e

It brings up an interesting question.... Would the deer numbers here in CA be better if more guys passed on young bucks. A trophy is in the eye of the beholder and I would never rag on a guy for killing a young buck especially a young hunter but it does beg the question

On the public land I hunt in the Sierras, where I'm trophy hunting (based on reasonable standards), I usually pass on 2 or more legal bucks each day I hunt. In the area I hunt locally, where I meat hunt, I've often passed on dinks for something slightly better. Then again, I've also taken dinks from the area. In general I'd say your right; but there are people like myself that have put in the time, effort and boot leather to confidently pass on legal animals. Granted, in the Sierra's I often end up with tag soup, as I don't lower my standards as my season comes to a close; but that's a choice I make, as I but meat in the freezer on my local hunt.

I doubt it bayboy. The majority of land in CA is private and not hunted very much. Habitat and migration route loss in the mule deer areas are the biggest problem. Access and terrain have always been the main reasons we have such a low success rate as a state.

Bayboy, DFG (I refuse to use their updated term at the moment) biologist have recommended closing the season in most zones for 2 years, then reopening with higher standards and lower tag numbers. Yet, when you look at the success rates in most zones, your not talking about many animals. Or better said, your not talking about a stastically signafiant number harvested. The biologist had many other recommendations, and made it clear that only most if not all the recommendations would need to be implemented to actually make improvements in deer numbers over a few consectuive years.

legal hunting accounts for less big game mortality than predators, automobiles and poachers. How would DFG do anything for the animals without lic/tag fees. Are they too big to fail- maybe a bailout.

Hunt big or go home only works if you have a lot of money and time. The rest of us are hunters of opportunity. If it is knocking who am I to keep the door closed?:D

I am the kind of hunter that will shoot just about any legal critter that gets in range. But in some states it is legal to shoot bear cubs and I will pass on that. In ohio where I live it is legal to shoot spotted fawns and I will pass on that . But even if Ohio has some real big bucks if a 1.5 year old comes buy he just may take a arrow.

I guess I am a trophy hunter. I get an A-31 tag (LA Co either sex), but I refuse to shoot does. I will also turn down barely legal bucks and did so twice this last season. I had one shot at an average forkie but totally missed it. I ate both my tags this year and the year before.

Depends..... If I 'm stalking in on a group of hogs, and there is a large boar in it, I'm working to postilion myself to take a shot at him. That is unless I think its not going to work out, or they are starting to get spooked. But, if I spot a loner hog, I'm working toward it for a shot. Unless its a real young hog, I'm sticking it with an arrow. Or a wet Sow with some little "footballs" following her around.

I just like to hunt. Ill pass on most sow, female an non mature species. I think every real hunter should have a nice buck mount, bear hide and a buffalo hide or mount. I enjoy the hunt more than anything. Every time I hunt, I learn more about nature and the "sacred hoop" of things. The smarter the animal, the better the hunt! For me its the romance of it. I hunt the animal, I learn nature, appreciate life, spend time with people, share what I've learned, and the best part for me is sharing a harvest. Bbq with friends, making use of all the animal to show my respect. Going to an event and sharing food I hunted and prepared. One thanksgiving we all gathered our harvest and had a full on, non store bought event. Pheasant, quail, wild hog, home grown veggies, ect. Everybody brought a dish of harvest and had a story to share. It was great and after dinner, we passed around the shine and continued stories and made plans to hunt together that would never happen. To me, that's what its all about. Keeping both feet on the ground and being grateful of any harvest. Happy hunting my friends!

A fork or any pig with a bow is a trophy. Heck a jack rabbit at 50 yards is a trophy. If I was just a meat hunter I would use a rifle! After spending countless hours scouting, hiking, driving, studying habits and all the money a 100 lb pig or a fork feels like a first place trophy. If you spend a bunch of money to have someone give you a shot then anything other than an animal of a lifetime is a participation trophy. I am as happy with a young pig as a 5 year old getting their first little league trophy even though they did not win a game. I never shoot wet sows or anything I am not going to eat other than predators/varmint.
