I'm new to shed hunting, could you guys give me some tips as to where to look for? You know like, what terrain features, or any other clues as to where to find sheds it will be greatly appreciated.

When should I start hunting for deer sheds in northern CA?
Does Elk also shed at the same time period than deer?

Thanks in advance for any tips you can give me!

I'm not from your region so I can't help you with any specifics but the best thing you can do to increase your chances of finding sheds is to scout deer/elk right now. Once you have them located it's just a matter of time spent hiking where they hang out. Sorry I can't help any more than that. Hopefully some of the west coast fellas will chime in. Good luck

Sheds can be found almost anywhere but what I look for is well traveled game trails and bedding areas. Also, fence lines can be a good place to look. When deer jump over the fences (ranch fences) often the impact will cause the antlers to fall off. Also, low lying branches can snag the antlers and cause them to fall off too. I know this sounds very basic but you've got to locate where the deer like to hang out. Once you do, you'll find some sheds. Then you're addicted like the rest of us.

Around here elk hold on their antlers much longer than deer do.

Perimetre fencing of large properties (where grass is for deer to eat).Find out where the deer are.You wont find a thing if you don't know where any deer are.In my case it's a matter of going to where they feed of a night, then concentrate on where they leave of a morning.Finding bedding area's,fences, deer trails.I don't find many in the hills around here as fallow would rather grass plains.I guess you just gota go where knowone else has.Or where their are actualy deer present.
It's all about learning deer.....

I've gone looking for sheds around some of the local regional parks such as briones. And sometimes I've had really good success....Look anywhere you see deer hanging out.
