I am 99% sure that the pig was required to be tagged -- you cannot even legally put a fatally injured deer out of its misery without a valid tag. And that gives me a new perspective on this topic. Those dogs, and the guide, were under contract to hunt for the tag holder -- the client. The dogs were out there chasing pigs because the client hired them. So it seems to me that the client was obligated to use his tag unless he had at least a verbal contract with the guide to do otherwise if they got an undersized pig.

All of which brings another question to my mind about hunting pigs with dogs. I've heard tales of dogs dispatching piglets before -- do the hunters or guides tag them? What are the rules about that? I know a depradation permit is a different issue, but what about when using dogs to hunt pigs with a pig tag? Should a client carry multiple pig tags just in case of undersized pigs?

There is no way I’m going to waste my tag on a chewed up 60-70 lb pig. The guide should have a pocket full of tags for situations like that. They’re his dogs, his responsibility. What happens if the dogs take out 3 little piglets? Does a client have to use 3 of his tags and pay the guide $500x3?

Ethics are a funny thing. What is "right" for me, may be different for you.

In another thread in this forum a guy mentions he wants to go pig hunting some more; but can't because he is out of sick days. To me that is un-ethical, I would never call in sick to my employer to go hunting. (But forty years ago it didn't bother me none to call in sick to the high school I was attending and then go hunting.)

Ethics are a funny thing. You just got to be able to sleep at night, and not worry what others think about you.

I think guides should not use dogs for the above reason. It is going to kill the dog deal on hogs first then the bear deal is next.Be carefull, polite, and on our own side of the fence or our dogs will be good pets!Upper

i would say its technically your fault for not being clear with the guide. BUT its a shame that you have to spell it out to him. He should also use discretion and understand your point of view.

on the other note. i personally have been reading and posting less here. its seems that more and more posts go this route. picking apart the initial post. "I don't see a tag on that deer" or whatever other ethical comments they have and feel the need to express. buzz killers are in full effect and getting worse.

Hitman. The only thing I can add is what has already been said. Communication, Communication, Communication is key in my book. I have been on plenty of hog hunts using dogs and wanting to take em with my pistol. During ever single hunt, I kept reminding my (guide) during the hunt what I wanted. I'm sure he got sick of hearing it, but we were both on the same page and it was CLEAR. I hunt with the same guy, so he's familiar with what I am after prior to my hunt. If I want something different I just tell him what I want. Spot and stalk or use dogs, he will ask me. I really enjoy watching dogs work and I know whatever they catch, they "catch". Just talk to whoever you hire and make it VERY clear as the type of hunt you are looking for.

bobby7321, we're taking action on the buzzkillers. I do want to point out that we DO NOT want to let things go that are illegal or highly unethical. Beer cans in the pics, people using dead animals for gag pics or target practice etc.

Instead of hijacking this thread, I moved the posts about tags on antlers to the mule deer forum.

This thread topic is about Hitman and the pig his guide had him shoot.

Hey Hitman, the original advise that Speck gave was right on. Take this as a lesson learned. It is over and done with and we can't change the past. My advise to you is don't use a guide in the future. You obviously seen like a guy with the ambition to go out and put in the time and do the homework to take a trophy. Ask questions, read articles, study maps and I am sure you'll get what your looking for. I also think that when it is all said and done with you will appreciate it even more because you did it by yourself. GOODLUCK.......
