Very true MNHNTR: If your a cop anywhere in California, you a cop everywhere in California. Also, all 50 states adhere to the "Uniforn Act of Fresh Pursuit". Which means if you follow a violator who has just commited a crime, across a state line, you can still arrest him and bring him back to California, without extradition.

MNHNTR,
All of what you say is true and accurate (830PC?, Must be). I could've exhausted myself on all of the same points but the risk of getting into "Flame Wars" with over zealous members would only jeapordize the privelage of coming to the site and sharing with other hunters. I'm an X with 13 Yrs. OTJ and the others, well...I'll preserve their privacy.

Again guys, this is just as it says, "A RANT". Every situation is unique and I certainly would'nt risk my safety or the safety of innocent persons for the purpose of stroking my own ego.

Hey, here's a thought: Let's move on to something else.

F350,

No worries and no flames (that I've seen). Folks get riled when you open up one of these cans of worms, and everybody's got an opinion. Don't be afraid to express your own. You started with a rant, so you must feel strongly that your position was right.

Or were you just venting? Nothing wrong with that either... sometimes it's great just to blow it out, right or wrong, and get it off your chest. There's plenty of that on this list. But it's guaranteed that it'll get a lot of response when you do. I think the fact that it generated so much discussion is a good thing, and productive. No point shutting it down. Somebody might learn something.

And you DID ask, "What would you do?"

Obviously I'm not the only one who has strong feelings about folks taking the law into their own hands. It's not just about the singular event you posted up... it's much larger than that. In the part of North Carolina that I hail from, there are a handful of shootings and two or three killings every year related to tresspassing hunters. When you read the court reports and newspapers, the situations are almost always identical... someone confronted the tresspassers, someone overstepped the bounds of good sense, and a legitimate complaint became a shootout. I'd bet none of the widows, fatherless children, or men sitting in prison would be willing to say, "it was worth it."

So yeah, it's a hot button for me. And I'm apparently not unique.

By the way, from reading your initial posts, I think you did the "right thing" (and I think you know it). Instead of relying on emotion and taking dangerous actions, you turned it back to the landowner. From your words, I'm assuming that you (like many other readers here) got the impression that she knew these other people were on the property.

Regardless, she obviously had no desire to push the issue, and that's her prerogative.

You have prerogatives too, as a paying client. You can simply never go back, you can choose to store the info away and keep it in mind next time you book... or you can choose to raise Cain and complain that she's in breach of your agreement, demanding satisfaction. Nobody here or anywhere should judge you for whichever decision you came to.

Speck,

Seriously though you're right. I would'nt have asked if I did'nt want the answer and sometimes it does just help to vent with people who can relate.

I believe that the minute any of us believe we have nothing to learn from one another, we are in a world of trouble. I truly do appreciate everyone's input and certainly won't hesitate in sharing the good, the bad or the ugly.

As far as everything else you said? Spoken like a true Gentleman.
Thanks for all the input guys!

This is way better than that OTHER forum I used to visit.

MNHNTR..........

I'm sure you're right, I always thought that. But, that wasn't what happened in Yuma last year with our sherriff friend. In fact, the landowner was the first to tell him he didn't have jurisdiction and his response wasn't that he did or didn't, he just remained neutral and tried to keep the situation under control (and did well without using his power of authority).

What he advised was that it would be up to my dad on if he wanted to press charges or not. The kid profusely apologized and my father let him slide because he seemed remorseful. I told the kids father that he was extremely lucky he hadn't decided to shoot my way, as if I'd survived, at the bare minimum I would've had him arrested for no less than attempted murder (I thought it more serious than simply an assualt charge.......pointing a gun at someone and shooting to me is attempted murder).

All that aside, it's good to know that an officer of the law is just that, anywhere in the state, but that it's up to his personal discretion (apparently) whether he wants to exercise that power of authority outside of his area or not..........I think this fella we were hunting with was a watch commander (?), not a patrol officer (I hope I got that term right.....I believe that's what he said he did for the Sherriff's dept.) I took it to mean that he pretty much stayed in the station, not in the middle of the action daily. Thanks for the edumacation on that. Take care and shoot safe.......
