I'm already getting ready for the POR in May... I can't wait! This will be my first pig hunt and my second big game hunt.

So help me realize what I NEED to carry, what I DON'T need, and what I WANT to carry. I'm going to itemize EVERYTHING I brought with me on the last hunt. Feel free to itemize everything you bring too...

1. Rifle
2. Extra ammo
3. Tag+lic+string in Ziplock bag
4. Camel Back
5. 1 empty Ziplock bag
6. S&W hatchet/guthook-knife combo
7. Swiss army knife
8. waterproof matches (in another ziplock bag)
9. lighter - in pocket
10. extra socks
11. Toilet paper
12. space blanket
13. 12ft of light rope
14. bandaids/moleskin/neosporin/asprin
15. Beef Jerky
16. Nutrition bars
17. Orange Beanie
18. Orange cap
19. Binoculars
20. cotton gloves
21. plastic gloves (for field dressing)
22. Mint Gum (never know when you meet a sexy texan chick chasing hogs!)
23. Streamlight LED green pocket flashlight (doesn't ruin night vision)
24. Compas+map
25. watch
26. Going to buy a LED headlamp to be hands free for that big one I'll shoot at sunset.
27. spf 15 chapstick
28. 5 mile walkie talkie/weather radio + batteries

Man that seems like a lot of stuff!

I'm thinking about buying a packframe too - on my deer hunt I never actually thought about how I'd get the deer back to camp... Or I might make a pair of wide dragging straps.

Also thought about bringing a big needle and fishing line - was told if you're going to drag game, sow it back up loosley after it's dressed to keep dirt/debris out of the cavity.

So......

Depends on the type of hunt. But, all those things are in my pack, at all times. Never fails that I end up lending something to somebody that doesn't have what they need.

Add gps, rangefinder, surveyor tape.

I've gotten into the habit of always putting on my pack. It takes a few extra minutes, and it gets heavy. But, you never know if the sight of a big buck or a big hog will lead you two miles down into some hell hole. Sun could go down. You could break an ankle or blow out a knee. Nice to have the basics on your back.

A few years ago, we jumped out of the truck to go still-hunt through a canyon at Tejon. Five minutes before dark, my buddy shot a hog about a mile from the truck. I'll never forget it, him yelling from 200 yds below me, "Dude, can you bring me a knife and a flashlight!"

"Yah, walk straight up the cliff about 200 yards!"

I'm with One Track...I almost always put on my daypack. Filled with most of the stuff already listed. I'd rather have it with me when I have chased after an animal for a mile and then realize that I need something out of my daypack and I am way too far to go back and get it.

'One-Track',

What do you use the Surveyors Tape for?

Looks like everything has been covered except mayby a set of shooting sticks, and I didn't see any game calls mentioned or scent cover.

Grunt:

I just use it to mark off my territory. String it accross roads and trails to keep people out of my honey holes. Just kiddin'.

It works pretty well for marking trails into spots, or when your lost, or when you are tracking a stuck pig, etc.

The day I shot my first elk, I forgot the flagging tape to mark the kill sight. I walked away to get assistance and supplies, only to return later to realize that I'd lost the exact location. It took two people about 24 hours to find that animal again. Luckily, It was cold and the meat was fine.

Also, a small, sharp bonesaw is always in my daypack. They're handy for lots of chores, including splitting the pelvis when packing quarters.

Good tip, Fairchase.

When I have to leave the kill site, I put an orange vest on the nearest landmark tree or rock. I always try to make sure I put it in clear sight, so I don't come back hunting for the vest as well as the kill.

For the car: fishing pole, fishing license plus bassin' plug and plastic worms. During the day, you never know ...

Whetstone

Garbage bag for the car (if the pig is a bleeder, you might need to put something under or around it). Paper towels or cloth towels

Water

Water in the car for cleaning up

Good luck!
