Have any of you been following this:

http://www.startribune.com/zimbabwe-2-to-appear-in-court-for-killing-cecil-the-lion/318828251/

Any credible rumors as to what actually happened? My friends are reading these vague articles and are starting to draw conclusions that the lion was located in the park and then they lured him out by dragging a carcass from the lion in the park to the private land. Any truth in that? I'd rather ask people who have some real connections to Africa than relying on the anti-hunting press.

If he walked off the park lookin to eat then he should be fair game, but on the other hand if the PH knew what would happen luring him over and thru the hunter under the bus that is pretty shady even if it is legal. From the vague info it sounds like he should be legal because baiting seems to be widely used to kill cats in africa
I am anxious to get more reputable info as well

I can not comment on the credibility of what I have read, but from what I have read, the lion was lured out of the park to private property. The owner of the private property did not have a permit to kill a lion for the 2015 year. The hunter, is saying that he was lead to believe the hunt was totally legal, and was unaware of it not being a legal hunt. The lion however was collared, and the collar was removed and hidden. The hunter was to supposed to have used a crossbow, wounding the lion. They tracked the lion for two days before finally killing it; how I am unaware. The hunter, and American Dentist, paid 55,000.00 for the hunt. From my understanding, an investigation is still underway. One arrest has been made, possibly two, and authorities are looking for the hunter.

The sad part is that this does nothing to benefit hunting. Generally, these hunt permits cost big bucks that go back into supporting programs to benefit these animals. The animals selected are carefully chosen to maintain healthy populations based on sound data and field conditions. Unfortunately, this particular lion was not chosen for harvest, thus this particular pride may suffer some grave consequences.

This is just one example why if a person targets such animals (protected animals within certain regions), it is best to utilize a reputable service to arrange the entire hunt. However, I think few here will ever have to worry about that.

By the way, there is nothing unique about a black mane on a lion, they just don't originate from Africa.

Looks like the dentist was duped by so-called "guides" and may face criminal charges in Africa.

Poor Bastard, notice how they are showing other hunt pictures as "evidence" of what a cold blooded killer he is? The guy should have been more careful and may have known what was going on and not cared. If that is true then he deserves the bad karma. But this could just as easily been some shadey guides that have gotten away with this kind of crap before and now they got caught. This guy could be completely innocent and is going to lose his practice and be a total outcast regardless of what the real "truth" is... This could happen to any of us that post hunting pictures on hunting forums. The media can spin it any way they feel gets the most amount of "clicks"... This kind of shit gives me Douche chills

The first article I read said it was a hunter from Spain. My local radio station was talking about it yesterday, saying how anyone that hunts lions should be hunted themselves and then "beheaded". I called in and yelled at the fat radio head.

I personally am not driven beyond normal expectations by the desire to kill a trophy and hang it on my wall. I also think that a DIY harvest is more gratifying than paying anyone to help you harvest an animal.
I also understand that some people want or need the shortcut to harvesting and animal by enlisting the help of a guide or a farmers alfalfa field.
That is just me, and I say to each his own.

With the case of this lion that was lured onto private land next the reserve i would ask a couple questions.
1) Is there a pride on lions that lives on the private property next the game reserve?
If there is great, if not i would have have to ask why would someone pay 50k to harvest one on barren land?
That was actually a two part question (whatever, it needed to be).
2) Why pay 50K to harvest a male lion, I only checked two safari web sites but they where at 24k and 25K for harvesting a male lion? One is attached below.

Actually he lives and practices in Bloomington, MN. Palmer has been hunting big game for many years. His kills are listed by Safari Club International. The club’s detailed record book lists 43 kills by Palmer, all by bow and arrow. His list includes moose, deer, buffalo, a polar bear and a mountain lion. A photo in the record book from 2005 shows him kneeling behind a dead lion, with his bow propped up against the animal. There is also a photo of him with an African elephant he shot in Zimbabwe in 2013.

This is all bad even if he did it legally... The press is negative for all of us..Just like posting pics of rabbits with their heads blown off it looks bad to anyone who is not a hunter and we sold think about the effects of these types of pics before posting them.

Yes, maybe after dozens of trophy hunts/harvests you would be well educated on what your 50k buys you. Question is, did the guides tell him it lived on a sanctuary, was a very popular lion and that it had to be lured off the sanctuary. Or maybe they just showed him a picture and described the lion to him without divulging the details.

Ever think for a minute what the Zimbabwean people think?
They could care less.

http://news.yahoo.com/lion-zimbabweans-ask-amid-global-cecil-circus-140822692.html

And since when the hell does an animal in Africa take precedence over planned parenthood in the good old USA?

For the record, I'm for the legal harvest of animals. Any legal animal. And if I wanna pay $50k for an African lion, I will.
If you don't approve, so be it.
City folks grieve for this propaganda bs, meanwhile the rest of the country wants to choke the living shit out of the city folks..
