Hi HCH,

You may want to hit the woods in mid Janurary. I found one toward the end of Jan. and it looked to have been there for a week or so. Some of my buddies have seen antlerless bucks that had already dropped their horns in early Janurary. I'm located in NE Tennessee, so geographicly we're almost in the same area. I found a shed a couple weeks ago while hunting in Oak Ridge Tennessee on a draw hunt.

I would guess the shed had been there two to three years based on the cracks and chews. I'm looking forward to shed hunting after season too.

Let us know how you do.

It seems that the deer in your area shed late to early feb. In that case I would wait till late Feb. to go out. If you go out too early when only a couple bucks have shedded you will spook all the other deer around. Usually during wintertime deer are concentrated in certain areas. If you spook them, it will be harder to find matched sets etc. Second you will have better luck waiting for all deer to shed because there will be more sheds on the ground. This is very important for new shed hunters so you do not get discouraged.

Good Luck!

I have found my earliest, and only, matching set the last weekend in Jan, but I find most of mine in March. I wait until some of the snow has melted, plus most bucks have shed by then.

My buddy found a beautiful HUGE matched set from a 9pt here in PA a few days before Christmas. The Friday after Christmas I was driving down the road with my family when I spied an antler lying along the road. I turned around and went back, and found a nice 4pt. with palmation laying along the guard rail...definately a shed, not a roadkill, must have dropped when the deer jumped the guard rail...
