Might be one single buck per zone???? They keep records and have a kill map online. HUNDREDS get killed in each zone on public land in the national forest every year right off of 80/50. Me and my neighbors and co worker just between us there's usaully like 6 taken every year. I've killed a dozen bucks on public land in these zones. Oh you must be joking whatever

Hunters in the Sierra waste a lot of time and money chasing tracks.

If you have not scouted a buck with your own eyes then it makes no sense to go there.

D3-5 is one of those places where there might be only one single buck in the whole zone.

It really sucks as a hunting area.

The locals will tell you as well.

If you wanna a great big buck go see Cal, If your down on your luck go see Cal, if your game bags a waggin and your wife she is a naggin, Go see Cal, Go see Cal, Go see Cal.:mooning::confused:

If you want to get a deer in these zones OP find the nastiest, deepest, darkest hole of forest and spend a lot of time there.

Not for public land harvests. Maybe the ranches there -- they have a lot of private property. GA PAC has raped a lot of the public land. The rest is too dry to support a deer herd.

I agree 100%, everyone just stay home this year. I found the D5 buck, so don't waste your time or money.

Yeah, I agree. I see lots of bucks down low on private property. I don't think many deer summer up high anymore. Too many people feeding them.

I do not know how much you know about the habits of big bucks? But the Google Search will help even the library has college school books on the subject.
Many students have done their thesis on the subject.

I have hunted Blacktail Deer for 20 plus years and Muleys about the same. Find out where the deer are feeding at in the summer when they are in velvet. This will tell you a lot about their habitat. Find out why the big bucks are above timber line in the summer. Checkout their stomach functions and how it works, this will tell you a lot about how they digest their food. Thus giving you insight as to where they would be at feeding at the times they would be there.

As mentioned before let other hunters help to your advantage, all those hunters can not be wrong about where the deer are. If you do want to get away from other hunters? At least spend some quality time in those areas and at the correct hours when deer are feeding, then follow them to their beds. You can do this with good scouting with a quality spotting scope.

Nothing better than finding deer on your own, making a stalk or ambushing a nice buck moving to or from the feed or bedding area. Do not just go walking all through an area unless you are just looking for tracks. Big buck tracks are hard to see in the hard rock basins most will be in during hunting season. There are plenty of quality bucks around, you just have to know their habits like they were your own.

I guess I didn't kill 16 bucks in the last 11 years mostly on federal land... Hmm guess all the horns on my woodshed are fake and my freezer has been empty the whole time. To the op, weather really is as big of a deal as we say it is, catch the right storm on the right day and you have venison.

Yes that is true EW, but if you put the boots to the ground, get back aways, locate some water you can find deer. Remember, deer don't camp on a spring, they just need to drink once a day or so based on the heat. Find a spring, not much needed, sit on it...oh wait, re-read your post, sorry you're doing just fine, lol!

And there is no water in that zone...That's why the buck is standing in mud....

I know. I must be pretty lucky to find water and a buck and look there both together.
