Im one of those poor hunters and there is no way I can afford a hunt on Tejon. Does anyone know of any good areas to hunt near by? I have heard about hunting the Carrizo Plains area but everyone I know hasnt been there in years. Any help would be great! Thanks

carriso is a bit ify i hunt there alot and have not seen or heard of any one taking a pig there in a while if you go try the state land behind the overlook of 5 willows springs area my recammendation would be camp roberts or fhl roberts is open every weekend this month 30 dollars a weekend or 55 you can hunt till june fhl is 25 dollars a weekend and the yearly pass expires the 31 of dec so i would wait till then for the yearly pass those would be your best luck but if you have lots of money there are paid hunt clubs close by but with your earlier statment i would try cr or fhl before carriso plains vern

Correction on this statement Gunner. The yearly pass does not expire on the 31st. It follows the same time frame as hunting does. My yearly pass for FHL states right on the sticker "Annual Hunting 1 July 2006 - 30 June 2007". It has been that way for as long as I've been hunting there; 9 years now.

Good question....I've been looking for some spots too. Public land is very limited and success rates are low. I hunted Tejon this year in June and saw a lot of hogs, but never got a shot on one. I'm heading back in March and hopefully my luck will be better since I have a better idea of where to look and where the pigs are (or at least were). I'm hoping to get up to FHL at least once in 2007 and will be going to some of the WU properties when I go active again in Feb..

Good luck to ya...

DFG has an inline booklet you can download which includes public land hunts. However keep in mind only 5% of wild pigs are taken on public land in addition to the above mentioned areas we have some threads on Lake Snoma which is archery only. Has far has Kern county its has far has i know there all on private land. WU has two properties near the Teachappi prison that have pigs i have seen one plus plenty of sign. They have about 15000 acres near Caliente which have some pigs and when there numbers grow they will allow hunting. Other then a few pigs on public land or joining a hunt club or lease and keeping in mind Ft. Tejon will one day soon be just another housing tract there is Texas.

Good Luck;

Camp Roberts and Fort Hunter Liggett are your best public land hunts if you are a civilian. If you are a Military active, retired or in the reserves the best public land hunting is Vandenberg Air Force Base. If you are planning a pig hunt in the Carrizo Plains then wait until there has been STRONG rainfall for several weeks and then call the Educational Center at the Carrizo Plains or the BLM office in Bakersfield and ask if the grass on the hillsides are all green color in the Carrizo Plains. Then if the hillsides are turned green in color head out the same month to the Carrizo Plains. The few hogs that will be entering the Carrizo from the Northwest part of the Carrizo Plains will be transient and will not stay for long. Have a FULL TANK and a MAP(I use a AAA San Luis Obispo County map) and compass and go at it. If the ground is still damp from the rains, stay on the paved roads if you are driving a 2 wheel drive. You will get stuck with your 2 wheel drive if you drive on the dirt roads and the ground is still damp. Bring your .22 rifle as cottontails are still open season until sometime in Jan. 2007 or your shotgun as quail is still open until Jan. 2007????. That way if you get bored looking and searching for the virtually NON-EXISTENT wild boar in the Carrizo, then you can harvest a few cottontail for your dinnerpot. There are a few that harvest a wild boar in the Carrizo and they are guys that know the lay of the land and the wet seasons. It will take you many tankfuls of gas and hundreds of dollars in gas money before you even come close to seeing a wild boar in the Carrizo, if you see one at all. You are better served saving this gas money and then joining the JHO Tejon hunt unless you enjoy cottontail, quail and jackrabbit shooting at the Carrizo. 'Nuff said.

Hey shine I'm also in youre boat & from the same town. There are alot of dues paying when it comes to public hogs. I started of in the same way. Carrizzo first lots of trips 1 hr from bako. Then pozo then rock front then roberts then fhl. Where I spent the remainder of My time focusing on. I was very eager I would go twice a month alot of times alone. This took about 8 years with about 5 actual sightings of hogs. Resulting in only shots at 2 but always learning. Then there is all the costs too I learned to live on sandwiches & water. Gas & beer get expensive. Then you start thinking hmmmm I could save up 500 bucks & go guided. Then you think, well I can go public alot more for 500, because you think only rich people go guided. Then ultimantly the last couple years I've been in a hunt club. Fees aint bad nobody hardly go's. The guys are always the same. Everone is respectful & get along. Camp is always set up when I get there. Then after all that HOGS are never a guarantee. So if ya gotta get one soon pay it will be cheaper in the end. After killin a few pigs aint no way I would. So anyways you're best bet is fhl. Actually there used to be alot of hogs at the plains. Theres carnaza hunting ranch & the twisselmans across the road. So hmm lets see theres barley across the street? Or theres tumbleweeds on carrizzo side where you gonna go? Good start coming on here & asking. Theres alot of friendly folks.
