Big Sandy has potential and the pig tracks are unbelievable (pig highway) it runs into Camp Roberts hunting area so know your bounderies... I have hunted there many times never see pigs but the sign that pig comes into that area is huge. I have always jumped a few bucks when Im in there, near 101 in the brush. If you like looking for indian artifacts this is a great place to do so.......

Kris, Big Sandy has lots of pig tracks, especially down in the river bed. I once saw prints so big, it was scary. That being said, I have never seen a pig there. I have been told they are nocturnal from lots of hunting pressure from the locals. I have also seen bucks and a few does there.

Kris, from the sounds of it, you were all over them at Lake Sonoma. If it were me, I'd be back on that trail.

Heard a lot about Big Sandy, but it's all the same as you're hearing here... lots of sign, but apparently the animals are primarily nocturnal. If you go, first and last light and lots of luck might do the trick... although who knows. Find a high spot and sit tight all day.

Big Sandy is one of the areas that I made a KLM Google Earth file of the boundary. I have never seen a pig there, and local traffic on the road was heavier than I expected. Always, ATV tracks in the river bed. Maybe, from a military patrol, or something?

Big Sandy is only open to hunting from July 1- Jan 27, basically during rabbit season. Shotgun, archery only

Why not try Stockdale Mt.
I have only hunted there 4 times, and scored twice.
Just make sure of where you are. I carry a GPS and have it turned on the whole time so I have proof of where I have been

There have been a lot of posts about trespassing and harassment from the local yahoos. but I have never had a problem.

This is from the BLM websight
Stockdale Mountain - At the end of the Slack Canyon Road northwest of Parkfield. This area (2000 acres) provides good hunting opportunities for deer and pigs. Public access to the Stockdale Mountain parcel is by foot only. The Slack Canyon Road is impassable when wet.

You go to Parkfield and turn north...........end of the road to the BLM signs and parking lot

Scottosan,

Thanks a million for the map. Now I can make a Google Earth boundary file. The map of Laguna Mountain that I work off of was mailed to me by the Hollister BLM Office, so I know for sure that the boundary marked on the map is correct. Do you know if the map you have posted was marked by the BLM Office? The reason I'm being so careful is because I don't want my maps to be used in any court cases.

thanks

Looked into the regs, no indication of closed time for Big S. I remember hunting there and the sign listing rules and regs at the entrance listed the open time as July 1- Jan 27. The last time I went by there, the sign was so shot up you couldn't read it.

Big Sandy has really taken a beating. With the last few drought years the locals run quads and jeeps in there and have no problem with the fact that they are in a wildlife area. Just look on the hills from 101 and you'll see what I mean.
