WELL IN MY AREA I AM SURE THE BIG BUCKS DROP FIRST. I KNOW THIS BECAUSE I PICKED UP A FEW BIG ONES AND STILL SAW SMALL BUCKS WITH ANTLERS ON THEIR HEADS. I TRY TO GET OUT EARLY TO BEAT THE RODENTS.
My expierence is with muleys so I cannont comment on whitetails. I used to believe that the big bucks tend to drop first but as i spend more time in the hills (3-4 days a week) I've noticed that is not the case. I've seen 190 class bucks with their antlers still in Mid march and most the other bucks have shedded. Last week I saw 3 bucks, two nice 24" 4 points and the 3rd was a shedded buck. I walked around and found 1 onf his antlers, he was a very small 3 pt.
I believe it just depends on the buck. One buck will shed early year in year out, another buck might tend to keep his antlers longer every year than most bucks.
The only safe bet is to wait till they all have shedded then go out, but with the competition these days that is not possible in every area.
I thought I was told that if they were born early like in May they drop earlier and if they were born late like, late june or july that they would drop later. Every yr after that they would drop around the same time as last yr.
Anyone agree with this? Hard for me to believe the dominant buck theory.
ONCE AGAIN I AM NOT POSITIVE BUT I HAVE BEEN WATCHING AROUND HERE. PRETTY MUCH EVERTHING HAS SHED. I SAW A LITTLE SPIKE THE OTHER DAY THAT WAS STILL HOLDING. I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL BUCKS WITH LARGER BODIES AND THEY ARE ALL FLATHEADS.
