Ok, I am going up to Vandenberg for the first time this Veterans day weekend. It will also be my first hog hunt. I was planning on just bringing my 30-06 Remington 700 and some heavy grain bullets. But a couple of weeks ago I bought a rifled barrel for my 870 because of some of the shotgun only areas on Pendleton. Now I can decide which one would work best.

As far as distance and accuracy I know the 30-06 will work best. But these SST Sabots I’m shooting are pretty darn accurate. Will the .50 ca sabot be better suited for pig than my 06?

Thanks for any and all suggestions

I'm not familiar with the terrain at Vandenberg but in the event you have the need to make a longer shot beyond 100 yds, I bring the 30-06. Or maybe bring them both and use the one appropriate for the terrain.

I personally have used the sst in my 870 with a rifled barrel. it works great and i actually got a hog at 150 yards with it... Dropped like a sack of rocks...

I have never hunted Vandenburg, however up at Hunter-Ligget there are areas that cannot be hunted with a rifle. The shotgun would come in handy for those areas.

I shot a 200 lb. pig at 100 yards with a 30-06 and a 200 grain bullet. It took the pig off it feet and it landed on the ground on its back, plenty of horse power.

30-'06 with heavy bullets(180 grn. and up) and 12 gauge sabot or slugs will definitely send the piggies to the freezer. Bring both as (in Fort Hunter Liggett) sometimes the piggies are in the shotgun only area and sometimes in the rifle area. You would be prepared for both. 'Nuff said.
