Whitetail hunting....

We are moving to Oregon in the spring of 2010..Question,are there any whitetail deer hunting in Oregon or is it just blacktail and mulie???
I know I can hunt bear,moose and elk there.........I know I don't like their blackpowder regs in Oregon,but I can still hunt in Montana with my blackpowder..............

There are a few whitetails in Oregon. Mostly in the North-East corner. If you happen to be in that are, it's reasonable to get a whitetail. There's also the Columbia River strain of Whitetails around Roseburg. Very difficult draw and all private land...good luck but it's not a realistic hunt opportunity.

If you want to hunt deer in Oregon, best to plan to hunt blacktails or muleys. You're right about the bear and elk hunting in Oregon...not sure what you're looking at with the moose though. I'm born and raised in Oregon and have hunted there my entire life. Never heard of a moose-hunt in the state. I do know an occasional moose wanders into the state and there are undoubtably some living there but not enough for a hunt.

The muzzle-loader hunts in Oregon are a bit different. They're a primitive-weapons hunt, not a modern muzzle-loader hunt as you've noticed. It makes sense when you realize that Oregon deer numbers are way, way, way down in lots of areas. No reason to make it any easier to harvest the deer that are remaining. The archery laws are almost as bad although the last few years have finally seen things become a bit more modern.

What part of the state do you plan to live in? I grew up down by Roseburg.

We've got lots of whitetails here in the NE corner of the state but they all hang out on private lands and without access it is really hard...But they are here! ODFW estimates that we have a wopping 30 head of moose in the state (although I believe it to be much higher) and as stated above there is no season for them. Other species to hunt include Mtn Goat, Bighorn Sheep, Deer, Elk, Cougar, Bear, Chuckar, Quail, Grouse (blues and ruffs), Ducks, Geese, among others....
