Wow, I was excited to see such a big photography group here. I really enjoy photographing wildlife and I thought I would share some of my favorite photos with you guys.
Oh wow! Those are great Lan-lord! I'm seriously impressed. I'm not a real photo grapher but I'm really trying to get into photography a little with digital cameras. I'm wanting a new model right now but can't decide what to get.
You bring up an interesting fact, you use a 17x zoom. Right now the zoom capabilites of the camera and the options of external zoom lens' is really what I'm looking into. Is 17x enough, a minimum, etc? Just curious.
Your work is awesome. What part of the country are you in?
I just got into photography less than a year ago. The great thing about digital is that the photography learning curve is alot easier and faster.
The 17x has definitely made a big impact on my ability to get nice close ups of wildlife. The Sony F707 has a Carl Zeiss 5x optical and a 2x digital zoom. For me that is the bare minimum. Adding the 1.7x gets me alot closer, and allows me to get more detail of the animal. The silhouette shots that are posted were maxed out at 17x and the deer were about 50 yards away. Of course I still wish I had more optical power sometimes, but in order to keep it affordable, the Sony F707 + 1.7x (called the B300, made by olympus) is a good camera for the money. Just yesterday I saw a really nice 10 pointer, but he was about 70 yards away. Just out of range for a nice photograph. I got some decent photos, but not anything near what I would like.
Here are a few more from my 707 and B300 combination.
Nice Pictures and really nice bucks!!! Do you need some help making some of them there Bucks stay still for a picture, ya know have bow/rifle will travel....What part of Texas are you from, my guess is down around Kerrville.
Lan, I'm from Nacogdoches Co., glad to have another Texas on the boad.
Wow, those pics are really awesome. So basically you're saying that 50 yards is about max for the 17x zoom? What kind of zoom would be needed to get clear pics out to around 100yrds? Just curious if that is even feasible or affordable.
You may have only been into photography less than a year but you are talented, no doubt. There are alot of people (like me) who can't take good pictures no matter how nice the camera is.
It is possible to get good shots at 100 yards, but you would need to have some kind of papparazzi looking setup. You can get cameras with exchangeable lenses. (they call these slr cameras) they are now making digital slr cameras (called dslr) now too. Basically you have what they call the photo back which has the mechanics an controls of the cam, and then you attach whatever lens you want. So you would have several lenses for the different ranges that you would be shooting at. needless to say this is very much on the pro side of photograpy and carries a professional price. The photo back will typically run you a $1000 and up, and then you will need to get the lenses. Im not up to speed on the price of lenses, but you would be in it potentially $3500 to get started.
There are a few different options though. Im not familiar with these options but I can point you where to look. You can hook your camera (a camera like mine, as well as any point and shoot cam that has threads on the end of the lens) up to a spotting scope. I have heard of this but I am not sure how successful or flexable this setup would be. You can also daisey chain several zooms together. Sometimes this requires fabricating a mounting surface, and bonding the lenses together. (not as scarey as it sounds)
here is a link about the 2 options I mentioned above. (this is info in reference to the cam that I use, but you can do this with other cams too)
My apologies to the dialup users. Is it prefered to post links to the photos?
Here are a few photos of a really wide 8pt. Saw him Thanksgiving morning.
I could practically count the points before I put the cam on him. Probably one
of the nicest 8pts Ive seen. His tines could be a little heavier.. but still a really
nice animal.
Chris, don't worry we are enjoying the pictures!! Thank you very much for all the info. I don't think I'll be spending $3,500 any time soon on a camera. I think my wife would have me sleeping on th porch.lol I'm going to look into your set up a little more. I'm seriously considering a new digital right now and I want to get the right thing. My biggest hang up is how the prices keep coming down. I hate to buy something for $400 today and it's only worth $300 next week.lol
I do have a question, where are you getting this close to this many big deer? You can't be getting these pics in the wild can you? Surely it's a high fenced place? Just curious, cause I'm amazed. Thanks again and keep the pics coming we love them.
Also I have heard that Olympus has some good cams out with a bigger zoom onboard the camera than what I have. I also read where spectr17 has indicated he shoots 150 yards (in another thread here) with 10x optical and 1.7x tele on his olympus. I have to say that I sometimes wish I had that much power in optics. But there is a trade off with my cam. It does have a piece of carl zeiss glass in front of it. It is well known that you can't get better than cz optics, whether it be lenses, binocs, scopes, etc ... My cam also has a 5MP sensor, which means it captures alot of detail. (although 5MP will be small in the next year or so, but it still packs a punch).
But if you can wait a while before you buy and know what it is that you want you will definitely benefit. The technology is getting better and the prices are getting lower. I really like my setup alot. Probably the only downside is that 50ish yards is about the max you can get. But any bowhunter would scoff at 50 yards, because they are successful at 20 and 30 yards.
As far as my ability to get so close to such big bucks, well alot of it is luck, and alot of it is 'ALOT of luck'
These big bucks will dart in a heart beat if/when they see me. I have more photos of a blur than I do of a nicely posed monster.
I'm going out his afternoon to a new spot to see what I can photograph. I'll post 'em if I like them later tonight.
LOL I just seen your post over at PhotoBlink! Looks like you'll fit in quite nicely! I still have a lot to learn!!!
Nice Job Chris! I would have voted but I havent submitted 10 photos yet!! I have 1 to go! Plus having trouble with photoblink not supporting Macintosh platform. Anyway, looking forward to seeing more of your great photos.
Thanks for the website info!! Yeah I thought I would post a few.. I was going to post alot of my deer photos, but you can only post one every 2 days... I hope I remember to go back and submit some more.
There are a few other contests that I have participated in (and won a few too) I like photoblink with the real time voting etc.. plus they seem to give alot/good feedback.. some sites dont give feed back on how the photo impacts them.,. I like feedback, if the photo sucks, I want to know, if it is great I want to know too.. I love the outdoors and I am really trying to capture it through my lens.. Hopefully I can get some good perspectives and opinions on my photographs from that site..
Chris, have you ever checked out Photo Sig? It is a pretty cool place with a huge amount of photographers sumbitting pics. They have a very good feedback system but sometimes there are so many pictures being pushed thru the system that people don't have time to give that many critiques. I've always gotten enough critiques to help me though. I've really learned alot there. There are alot of genuine pros there but there are also alot of people there who just barely know how to work a camera.LOL Check it out if you already haven't.
Oh you are right about your camera, anything with a CZ lens is got to be good. My dad owns a hunting and fishing manufacture's rep. agency and one the companies they represent is Zeiss optics.(scopes and binoculars) Heck, I can't even afford a set of their binoculars at cost!!
