Who wants to hunt Lanai ?

I posted this before in the Bowhunting forum but it seems that no mainlanders can get permission from their wives to go hunt in Hawaii, go figure.
If any Locals reading this are planning or would like to hunt axis deer on Lanai, I'd like to hook up with you and split the cost of the 4x4 rental. $100 a day is too steep for me but splitting the cost 3 or 4 ways is very reasonable. I've hunted Lanai before with archery, muzzleloader and rifle but I prefer archery and muzzleloader a close 2nd. Don't care much for the rifle hunt.
If you want to put in for the archery or muzzleloader hunt, let me know soon, the applications are due at the end of this month.

A friend and I are planning to hunt Lanai, but, are planning to hunt the rifle season. If you have a change of heart and want decide on rifle, let me know.

When would this hunt be?
I am very interested - and I am very sure I can swing a trip with the wife to Hawaii, if I dump her in some nice resort etc. but I do not have a lot of free time.
I would love to take an axis with a bow - if not this time then some time later.

Hey Glass Eye (and anybody else hunting Lanai)

I'd love to do some bowhunting on Lanai with you. I've got a permit and have hunted the private lands before, but I haven't taken a deer yet (saw TONS of sign, though!). I've actually got a 4wd parked on Lanai that I use whenever I go hunting, so vehicle expenses will be nil (except for the $4.00+ gasoline prices). I also have a camping equipment, since I oftentimes just camp at Manele Bay for $5.00 a day rather than pay $180 a day for a house.

Never killed a deer yet. But I have shot mouflon. Don't quite like the taste of it, though...

I live over here on Oahu, and want to get to Lanai before the end of April. I only have my rifle here, so muzzleloading is out for me. Anyone want to try and plan a trip? I am good for camping or renting a house. I'd have to get the private land permit soon, so let me know! Send me a message and I'll send you my email.

Wish you had contacted me sooner. Nobody took me up on the offer so I bought tickets ( Hawaiian Air, thank God ) to Kona for May 13.
I also just booked a hunt for Gould's Turkey in Chihuahua for the end of April.
Why don't we plan on hunting archery on the lottery hunt for next February and if we tag out early we can buy the Lanai Co. permit and hunt that as well.

I've been away at work and made up my mind to go over there while I was gone. I don't have a bow, so I can't sign up for the archery hunt, but I'm still going to put an application in for the rifle hunt. We'll see how it goes. Have you done the private land hunts before with rifle? I'd like to take a trip over there while I am home for this month.

Nice sheep. Were they taken on the public hunt or on the private land. I'm planning on applying for the mouflon hunt this year.

The sheep were taken on private land during a private hunt (Yeah, couldn't find the deer, so I had to settle for mouflon). But there are lots of mouflon in the public area as well...so not to worry.

I've seen lots of activity in the area known as "Bombing Range." I kinda like that area for both deer and sheep. I also like the upper area of awaloa road (I think that's what it's called).

good luck! Can't wait to get back to Lanai myself, but I've been too busy lately doing a lot of deep sea fishing (Ahi fever around the corner, bay-bee!)

BTW, me and "Hihunter" did a Lanai hunting trip last month. He took down two nice does, both before 10 a.m., and both kills were pretty impressive. i guess he's being a bit humble about his first axis hunt, which is why he hasn't posted about it. but I'll let you'all in, since I was the "official driver" of the hunt. Call me bwana.

First kill was from about 150 yards, using a 30-30 Marlin and leverevolution ammo at about 7:30 a.m, across a shallow ravine. Dropped her right in her tracks.

After deboning the doe, we moved a couple ravines over and set up just outside the koa trees on the top of the ravine. After sitting motionless and listening for about 15 minutes, heard a grunting coming out of the koa trees and...voila! A nice size doe strolls out from the trees about 40 yards away. But before coming all the way out, she stops and senses something wrong...then she looks up into our direction and her body stiffens up. We were busted! She turns and crouches as she starts to run away, then....BAM! Hihunter fires off a shot that hits her low in the chest cavity. She stumbles, but continues to prance back into the koa trees. A couple seconds later...BAM! Another shot, this one hitting the front shoulder. The doe somersaults and noseplants, dead as a doorknob. I'd say this second shot was taken from about 80 yards out. Excellent moving shot which totally impressed the heck out of me.

All in all an excellent hunting trip.

Thanks for recounting the trip, Guzy. I think you got it about right on, although I think the second shot on that one doe was probably a lot of luck... But I'll take the compliment! Can't wait to do it again! I'm also thinking about applying for the Blacktail on Kauai if you are interested in trying your luck at that. Give me a call when you are in town, I made a mold for some lures you might want to try on Ahi. Otherwise I am headed to the mainland for trout/smallmouth this summer, so I won't be around until the fall. Take care,

Hihunter-Guzy nice animals Ive been trying to plan a trip on the big island an visit my sister in Hilo and do some hunting. Hope to connect with some of the bruddahs some day. I prefer Bowhunting but also rifle hunt. keep posting those great hunts. Feel free to contact me any time.I'm originally from Maile beach on the waianae coast but now reside in Gilroy,ca.
