1) because the season is open all year.
2) because they are plentiful compared to some speicies
3) because they are absolutely the easiest game animal to hunt and be successful even if you don't hunt BHR
Superduty... not after this year, unless you're a lifetime license holder.
Pig tags increase to a single tag for $15.
We'll see if the hog forum stays so popular after that (it probably will).
I agree with the other guys. While I love mud and wallows, I have to say that the pig forum stays busy because we are hunting these suckers year-round.
The deer forums heat up pretty good about August through December, then die out. Waterfowl gets cranking from November through January, then dies off. But the whole time, we're out there chasing pigs and varmints, and we all wanna talk about it in hopes that someone will let slip a "secret honey hole" or other valuable information.
Check out the DFG site. There's a downloadable document that comes with the application forms. You can read about it there. There are also several threads here on JHO about the lifetime license, with questions and answers galore.
I got mine a few years back, and I'm danged glad I did. I'd expected it to pay for itself in about 12 years, but at this rate I'll break even in less than 10 years.
I'd say it's the closest thing to a "Poor Man's Safari".
I don't really mind the single tag thing too much. Especially if it keeps my Vehicle Lic. fee from tripling.
I do feel it's another chip away at the hunters but it's a small chip.
Starting next year, pig tags will be about $15 dollars. One helluva price increase. If I wanted to could I buy more than one at $15 or is it going to be one per license year?
For me the hog forum is the best because of all of the above listed reasons. I really appreciate all of the info and insight shared here.
You'll be able to buy all you want, but at $15 per, you can believe the sales will be slower. Of course, this way the state can sell only one tag and still pull down more than they make off the books.
There're several discussions about this topic in the forum, so I won't add more to it now. Even though I have my lifetime license, I'm still not real happy about this very unfair change.
Oz, I just sent out an email on that. I will let you know the response when she replies. Katie,
My wife should be faxing you the information to purchase our lifetime licenses today 4/17/04. Your site is showing that it could take up to 45 days for processing. I am assuming that this represents 45 working days. This should still give us 52 working days before the end of the hunting season and before any potential fee increases or changes. 1. My concerns are is there still enough time if we do get you guys the information/monies? My information states that by purchasing this lic. we will be able to avoid any changes in the future. 2. Is this true? Do you just get grandfathered into what you originally purchased? If so than I can see this being a wise long term investment not to mention the assistance to the programs it helps to fund.
Thank you for your time,
Oz, just got the reply via email."You should get your license is about 15 working days and you will not
have to pay any price increase." The wife also talked with her yesterday and it was said that we will also score on the five pig tags with the big game package. Next year that will probably change due to the increase of $15 per tag. I picked up the sportsman wich has the fishing/hunting with the extra big game and bird. The wife just picked up the hunting with the added big game and added bird. If you do the math it will pay off total in around 10yrs. and that's without adding my fishing making the fishing basically free. Good Luck.
