Wild Boars Becoming a Problem in Crawford County
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 05/18/2004

Wild boars are starting to become a nuisance in Crawford County in western Wisconsin, and state wildlife officials say they need more help from hunters to get rid of the pesky hogs. According to a report last weekend by the Associated Press, hunters have killed 50 wild boars since they were first discovered in fall 2002--but since they reproduce so rapidly, it is difficult to keep the population under control.
Dave Matheys with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says no one knows for sure how the animals got into the area, though smaller groups of wild hogs have popped up in the Black River State Forest, Eau Claire County Forest and Clark County.

The crop of feral pigs in Crawford County likely was either intentionally released by someone or they escaped, he said.

The wild pigs look different than other swine, as they have shaggy dark-colored coats, longer snouts, straight tails and tusks they use to root up land looking for food.

The animals, which can weigh up to several hundred pounds, have also been known to attack livestock and pets.
