Well, i was lucky enough to find an opening at Wild Hog Adventures (aka Chopper's) this past weekend due to a cancellation. In a few of Chopper's post about the march & april hunts, he mentioned the pigs are pretty thick right now....well, he ain't kiddin'.
The first morning found me at one of my favorite spots, it was just getting light & i was facing a grassy slope hoping to catch a pig heading to his bed, the hill had two large stumps on it that looked exactly like a pig........i put the glass on 'em & nothing, looked up again and there was a third stump moving 80 yards away to my left. Got the wind in my favor & slowly walked up the road to head 'em off...figured a lone pig would more than likely be a boar so i was getting a little excited, came around an oak and saw a black stump along side the road, couldn't quite make out what it was.......then it ran away. Tried to put a move on it, but that sucker kept runnin'.....walked up hill to glass just as the sun was coming up, as i sat there i thought i heard crows in the canyon. Loud noise w/ cackles, cawls, & all that crow talk......but figured when i heard a sqeal among 'em, it was actually a herd of pigs feeding in the canyon. Grabed my bow and headed straight down, saw a large black pig moving right to left at 80 yards, but figured i'd head for the herd to my right....put a great sneak on 'em only to find they're gone....nothing but tracks & crap.
The sun was fully up by now and i was figuring my hunt would be over soon, i figured as a last resort i'd head down the canyon in the direction both pigs where moving....started creapin' along real slow w/ an arrow knocked. Got to the edge of a chamise thicket and heard a grunt, looked up and saw approx. 8 pigs moving right at me from 15 yards. A large black pig was leading the group and went to my left, at 7 yards the lead pig stopped and offered the perfect shot.....pulled the trigger & pigs where runnin' everywhere. The arrow zipped completely through, the pig ran into the chamise along w/ another small boar and stopped. I backed up the adjacent hill to glass the thicket and couldn't see a thing. After a short wait and with what i surely thought was a double lung, i went after it. Nothing! hardly a drop of blood for 30 yards. It had crossed a dozer cut and i was following tracks w/ a drop here and there. Belly crawled through some more pig tunnels for another 150 yards and finally found her.
7 yard double lung shot...she ran 200 yards, 240lb's live weight....the march & april hunts are gonna be good!
